I fish lakes and ponds around Ohio. I fish live worms, a wacky worm setup and jerkbaits. My problem is when I go to non-clear water out in the open. I heard jerkbaits aren't very effective in muddy water, so I don't know what bait to turn to. (I also have a beetle spin I frequently use.) Thanks!

Are you trying to fish offshore, or are you just saying the body of water you're fishing is deep? Generally, fish in dirty water tend to stay shallow. Jerkbaits can work in muddy water, they're just not the best option.

I fish off docks in 15+ ft water, and deep holes in lakes 20+ do you think crankbaits would work better here?

Is it that deep near the shoreline or are you fishing off the ends of the docks?

Off of docks, not near shorelines.

I would try fishing right along the shoreline. Bass will usually hold very shallow and near some form of cover when the water is muddy. A rattling squarebill, spinnerbait with colorado blades, bladed jig in a dark color, dark colored jig or plastic would be my choice. Sometimes you'll have to make multiple cast to a good looking piece of cover to finally get one to bite. 

If your standing at the ends of docks and just casting out in the "open" and muddy water too boot , thats not a very productive way to catch fish . The dock itself is  where some bass will be . 

Bass like to relate to something visible and they dont suspend well in muddy water .There is nothing for them to see and be next to out there . The less clear it is the closer they are to cover . Also the less clear the shallower you will find them  . Thats the biggest mistake new anglers make , casting out into nowhere land . 

I would definitely be throwing a rattling or vibrating crankbait, spinnerbait, top water or bladed jig. The bass need to feel the bait if they can't see it.
