Spinning Jerkbait/wacky rig rod?

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a quality spinning  jerkbait and wacky rig rod for a price up to $85. The qualities I am looking for are a length between 6'6 and 6'10, with medium power and moderate or moderate-heavy action. I will be using 10Ib fluorocarbon line. Can someone recommend a rod like this? (If I am being too picky for the price please tell me.) Thanks!

Falcon bucoo spinning rods fit your needs perfectly. They have a moderate action and a medium power in 6'6 or 7' and they are very light and sensitive. They retail for $100 but you can find them for less

I got this rod about a month ago and have really liked it so far! Although the action is faster than you are wanting, I got mine primarily for weightless soft plastics. They might have a model with a little slower action.image.png

I have a 6' 8" M/F Academy Ethos that I use for jerkbaits and small cranks. I don't normally use it for wacky rigs but it would do it just fine. The rod I use for wacky rigs is a 6' 8" M/F Mojo "Wacky Style", so the exact same specs as the Ethos, I just have 2 rods because I like to keep both those style baits rigged at all times.

Most spinning reel handles are interchangeable.  Pflueger makes some well built low cost reels.  Take a look at the Trion or for a bit more the President.

Assuming you're talking about spinning reels, the handles are interchangeable in almost all of then anymore.

The Pfluger President is pretty hard to beat for the money.

So when you go to buy jerkbaits, do you pay attention the the lure weight recommended on the rod? Is that range important, or is it just a recommendation? Sorry for bugging you:mellow:

Not bugging anyone. Just stay close to the ratings, mainly don'tgo too far above the top rating and you'll be fine.

Stay close to the suggested weight, you can go a little heavier but don't try to throw a jerkbait meant for muskies on a bass rod. Also don't go too light because then you won't be getting good casting distance

6'8" M/XF spinning rods are pretty versatile sticks.............mfg. dependent of course, as they are all not true to the rating. I have had several from several diff. mfgs. over the years.

The St Croix blanks in this power/action are fantastic "all purpose" spinning rods.

My current 6'8" M/XF spinning rod is a custom build on a Batson Immortal blank, and it's a great blank for wacky rigs, shaky heads, skipping weightless/lightly weighted plastics under docks, overhanging trees, etc..., and casting small jerkbaits and/or other small hard baits that I can't toss effectively on casting gear.

Ryan, if you can spare the time, I would pop in to your local Wally world if you are in the market for that rod and reel.  Check their clearance/talk to a manager.  I recently found a 7' Vendetta spinning rod (current version, MH/F though) for $25 and the President reel the guys have mentioned for $17.  I asked for the manager, asked if he could do anything better, and he further reduced the rod.  I saw Quantum KVD and other $80-120 range spinning rods in clearance at a different store recently.  They seem to be on sale these days for whatever reason.  Its a shot in the dark, but you just might luck out.  Above all, 2x on the President.  I got one 3 years ago and its been a good reel at the right price for me too.

Several people have suggested the Pflueger President already.  My wife and I own 6 of them all 25-30-35 and 40 series reels.  They have all caught many many bass and stripers over the last 8 to 10 years.  I have never had to do anything more then clean them and regrease them once in a while.  For about $60 they are just work horses.  For a rod suggestion check out Falcon Buccoo as others have said also.  Wal Mart is your best and least expensive source for one. I would pair it with a 30 size reel

I used an ethos rod rod for 2 years til i upgraded to a dobyns champion. You can get one meduim with moderate or fast action.  Now my fiancee is using it for senkos. I have a casting one i use for  cranks. Really nice rods for the price.
