Okay so I'm looking to deepen my arsenal quite a bit. As of right now I am looking for a flipping stick, and treble hook rod for jerkbaits, topwaters, small cranks, etc. I am also needing to get a finesse spinning setup since my current one is a $15 Walmart combo I got from project prom 3 years ago. Looking to stay as close to $100 as possible per rod but wouldn't mind spending an extra $30 or so. My current rods are a Powell Inferno Frog and Toad 7'2" Mag H-F, a Mojo Bass 7' MH-F spinnerbaits rod, and a Kistler Magnesium TS 6'9" MH-XF that I've been throwing jigs and small swimbaits and reaction baits on. I do mostly bank fishing so I would prefer a 7'6" flip/punch rod.

I have been looking at the Dobyns Fury, Castaway Taranis CX1 as well as the Duckett Ghost and the rest of the Inferno rods since Powell dropped the price by $20. Any info, opinions or suggestions are appreciated thanks.

Any of the original Tatula rods if you can find them around the $100 mark.  I like mine a lot.  I'm a fan of Fenwick.  FFO would be the first place I looked.  An Aetos or Smallmouth at $75 is a steal as is an HMG at $59.  I especially like the Smallmouth 6'10" MH-MF and 6'9" M-XF that they still have a few of.  One rod at $59 gets a shipping charge of $9 something.  A $75 rod has free shipping.

The HMG 7'2" MHCB and 7'3" MHF are both pretty nice rods if their specs fit rods you are looking for...$59.

Recently received the Aetos 6'6" ML-M and it is a beautiful rod.  Smalljaw67 says it is a fantastic small crankbait rod.  Has never steered me wrong yet.  Haven't had it out.  :(

EDIT:  Should mention the Smallmouth casting rod handles are short with the 6'9" M-XF being the shortest of those I own.

dobyn's fury is a good option at that price point, i like mine.  i'd second the original tatula though, and at the price that Sportsman's Outfitters has them for..... i'd jump on them.

Fenwick HMG, BPS Carbonlite would be my choices. But there are a ton of good rod's within that price range. Dobyns fury is another, some say its not worth the Dobyns name but others love em

treble hook rod for jerkbaits, topwaters, small cranks

I just about a month ago was in your shoes needing to get a little more rod specific for small cranks. I ordered one of these Fenwick® HMG® Casting Rod MODEL#GT72MFCB from www.ffo-tackle.com and without a doubt found it to become one of my favorite rods. For the $58.88 and oversized surcharge of $10.00 I don't know if it can be beat. They have what appears to be a excellent Limited Lifetime Warranty although I have never used it.

Second time out with it it pulled in a 6.25lb LMB that fought pretty hard and it did awesome. I was sick last Saturday when one eye got broke on my boat in a accident so I ordered another new rod Sunday night. Also have the broke one being repaired as well. The guy doing the repair with over a hundred rods laying there started talking about what a excellent rod these were for $100 and raved about it. Seemed sincere but he does build custom rods and only charged me $7.50 to make the rod repair. Maybe he was BSing me either way I really like it.

looking for a flipping stick

I have one of the 7'11" Mojo Bass Flippin rods and it has been a excellent rod as well. I hear great things about the new Mojo Bass line up mine is the old model but I cant see either being a bad choice if you like the style grip and that extra reach.

I cant speak for any of the other brands I haven't actually used any of them other than holding them in a store.

If I were you I'd be looking hard at the new gen St. Croix Mojo's. With the upgraded blank $120 is a great price for that rod.

I think the Fenwick Silverhawk is still on sale at cabela's. A great rod, and you could get two.

+1 to that!!

I just got back from my local gander Mountain and held every rod in there in that price range, and the Mojo was the lightest of them all not to mention the great feel. (even lighter than the 150 to 200 range) I am very weight conscious, ounces makes pounds and pounds make pain lol

To be honest i didn't want to like the Mojo because of its name and color, I'm pretty picky and don't like flash but the purple is really toned down and the name well it is what it is.

I guess when i hear Mojo i think of Mojo Nixon the loud mouth on Sirius radio's outlaw country station, he gets on my nerves with all his antics, and his politics but i will not go there.

I will be making the splurge this weekend on my first set of quality rod and reels, and the first round pick of rods is currently the ST. Croix Mojo series.

Now choosing a bait caster to put on them is going to be the biggest challenge so many options, options options... ... ... ... ... ...

that's my 2 cents!

Consider the IROD Genesis II rods.  Really nice, light and good hardware on them. They run a little more  at $149 but worth it.  They have very specific technique rods. I own a Gabe's Rip Rap Special covers my small to medium cranks very well. I own an Abu Ike Series Jerkbait rod which I love as well.  His series runs about $129 and fish very well too.I believe he has 15 rods in his series and you could definitely find several to work for you.

@SmallTownTexasAngler

If you are still looking I have a Diawa Tatula that you can try out before you buy. I bought a couple custom Tigerrodz that you can also try.

Shoot me a message and we can meet up.

Look at the 2:35 mark for a 20% off code if you are looking at the Castaway Taranis.

i will only suggest exactly what i use and thats dobyns...this year i went through my arsenal and started replaceing the mojos of the past with the new dobyns fury series and i love them great rod for the price and they will back it up for life which is worth alot as well.  the mojos are nice but the warranty isnt the greatest but also not the worst either but it hurts the pocket book breaking a rod and having to spend full retail to replace it thats why i changed to the dobyns this year after breeaking a few mojos this spring itll be nice having a replacement rod only cost 50 and not 120

and i dont care what anyone says rods break it just happens

+2 on this...  excellent rod for the money.  The only other rod I have in that price range that I like as much is a Daiwa Tatula.

Tight lines,

Bob
