Leader knot issue

Recommended Posts

Lost a pretty nice fish last night, pretty salty about it. My knot broke on 4 consecutive hooksets last night, I use a double uni to tie 8lb Invizx to 20lb PowerPro. From what I can tell, the knot is slipping, because the knot is still on the braid. What gives? Should I try a new knot?

That's interesting.

With pure fluoro I like the Mod'd Albright,
about 7-10 wraps up and 4-5 back down.

But I've generally had very good success
with double uni, 5-6 loops for braid, and
about 5-6 as well for the leader.

I do about 3 loops for each, I was going to start adding more.

That could very well be the issue.

The heavier the line, the fewer loops I tie.

But with 8# FC, I'd def go more.

That could be the problem. On all my leader knots I use at least 5 wraps

One of the reasons I switched from the uni-uni connect in favor of the Alberto is the bulk of the knot. There is no way to tie it and have it come out as slim as the Alberto, although some people say they tie it without the bulk. The Alberto, which, in reality, is actually a braid and not a knot, makes a slim, very reliable leader connection. You just have to get past the intimidating instructions which portray it as being very difficult to tie. After a bit of practice, it becomes easy.  JMO. :)

Double uni takes more than 3 wraps. I use 5 or 6.   Make sure you lube it as you pull it tight.  Alberto's last step is important.  You have to put the tag through the "loop" in the right direction or it will fail.  I really don't see how any method of tying the double uni will make it "compact."  Alberto is much smaller.  I like the FG, smallest and strongest, a little tough to learn to tie properly, but once you get it, you'll love it.  Search for YouTube videos on how to tie it.

Maybe take an hour to practice your leader knots. Cut off a few yards of each line you'll be using, sit at the kitchen table and just tie your knot over and over until you get it right every time. I know I've been saying it a lot lately, but getting good at tying leader knots is important, and having confidence that they will not break is just as important. I use the Albright special knot, but there are several knots that will work, including the one you use. Leaders can be advantageous in many situations, and I use them a lot, from 8 lb mono to 25lb fluoro. I have 100% confidence in my leader knots holding up, and I got that way by practicing.

Also make sure you are not setting the hook to hard. The braid has no stretch at all, there is no shock absorbtion. Puts a lot of stress on the leader and knot.

Alberto knot........Learn it.  Know it.  Live it.  My stubby little, sausage-like fingers have trouble tying knots.  I can tie the Alberto without much hassle.  If I can do it...you can too.1793845

Yep- Alberto Knot. The only issue I have had so far is when I try tying 12 lb invizx to 8 lb nanofil. THe fluoro keeps breaking. not a problem with power pro or spiderwire or even 10 lb nanofil, just the 8 lb nanofil. Any thoughts?

and also..the Alberto is not as "fussy" as the picture I posted makes it out to be.  I'm usually tying 20 lb Power pro to 12 lb fluoro.  I make 7 loops up and  4 or 5 back and they don't always lay perfectly between the forward loops.  I'll pull it about 3/4 tight , run my fingers over it a time or 2 to smooth it out and cinch it up.  Never had one break that wasn't snagged.  Once again..if I can do it...you can too

Although there are technical variations in strength, for the most part ANY fishing knot will work as long as it is tied correctly...

If it ain't perfect, it ain't good enough!

I remember the alberto like this.    Front to back , over and attack, 5 loops down and 5 loops back, back to front

The FC is not slipping, the braid is cutting the FC!  The two are direct opposition to each other with the uni/uni.  Bad Idea from the start.  I lost several fish on the hookset before I changed to "improved" alberto;  my own improvement.  I wrap back through the original loop twice.
