What size spinning rod and reel to use with 65 lb braid ?

Featured Replies

I'm not good with a baitcaster, so I want to use a spinning setup for frog fishing and in slop. What combo of rod and reel would work best for this ?

I would go with lighter line if at all possible. You don't generally need 50 or 65 pound braid to get a fish out of vegetation, it just the diameter fits a baitcaster better. I would probably opt for a 3000 size reel and 30lb braid with a stout rod. You're not going to want to make really long cast, so line capacity shouldn't be a huge issue.

No less than a medium heavy rod.

While I'm not a fan of frogging with spinning tackle, I do have a friend that is.  He uses a medium heavy mojo with 30lb braid.  He doesn't seem to have any problems.

First, welcome to the forums!

Second, @Bluebasser86 is spot on.

Here's an article you will want to read about
an FLW pro who only uses spinning gear and
does a lot of frog fishing...

And one with a Fast or XFast tip if you can find it. I bought a Cabela's Frog BC rod a while back. I planned to use it primarily for frogs, but also for jigs. At first I was not pleased with it for jigs.A little too stiff. But after a visit to a very weedy pond, it's just the ticket for frogs. My point is, 7'3", HVY-Fast is just the ticket for frogs in vegetation.

I'll recommend  a St Croix Premier Spinning rod PS70HF and a Pflueger Supreme Spinning Reel.

Either the SUPSP35X or SUPSP40X

That's a quality combo that will get the job done with 50lb braid and won't break the bank either.
