Frog line Stright braid or braid to mono?

Featured Replies

I fish mostly clear banks when using hollow body frogs. Some might have slight weeds but it is usually clear water. I have been using 17# mono but lately have been missing more than before. I read a lot about using braid with frogs and am thinking of switching. Should I use Stright braid or braid to a mono leader?

Braid is a must for a frog. If you use a leader, make sure you tie a good knot, I broke one off at the knot on a strike the other day and lost my frog, and it was only a 1.5 pounder.

Straight braid. A leader imho, is another point that can fail over time on hooksets.

I use leaders a lot, but would never use them for frogs. I would HIGHLY recommend at least 30lb braid for any type of frogging.

Straight braid,30 lb.works for me.Easy to toss,plenty strong.

I am trying frogging for the first time and used 30lb braid, but am having huge issues with the line digging in when I make a hookset or have to pull out of weeds.  Would moving up to 50lb help with this?

Definitely. I never use line less than 10 lb diameter on a baitcast reel. Besides, 50 pound is the minimum braid for frogging.

Yes, 50lb works perfect for frogs.

To the OP, straight braid, no need for a leader in this situation.

Agreed that straight braid is the way to go and a minimum of 40lb.

Straight braid! No need for any type of leader.

I'd get avocados.

Braid to mono is good if you have Pike. Big Pike like $9 frogs.

I lost a 35+ inch muskie at the boat with 50lb braid. Absolutely inhaled my frog. Not much I could have done haha about made me sick.

Yep, that's the reason I don't throw frogs much anymore. Teeth and braid are a bad combination.

I like straight braid. I feel like I really need to drive the hook home when frog fishing, and the lure usually get hit a pretty good ways away from the boat/shore. It may be in my head, but I feel like braid won't stretch as much, especially over a long distance, as mono, allowing for a stronger hookset.

Its not in your head lol. Same reason I like braid for all my topwater, because of the stretch associated with mono. But I use a short heavy/stiff mono leader for my treble walking baits so I'm not wrapping the trebles up in the braid all the time.

I would switch over to braid and I don't drop below 50 for my forggin/flippin/punching applications.

Avacados are good!

Straight braid, and  it may be unnecessary, but I always super glue my palomar knot in place with braid.

I run a leader with braid all the time...EXCEPT on my froggin rod...straight braid man!
