I have heard of people not even tying a knot just putting tape over it.   Does that work

That's all i do, I'm not worried about being spooled for what I fish for. If I was fishing for larger fish, then maybe.

I don't like tape gunk though I used to use that method. Now, I just use an overhand knot.

So i can tie a bad knot

I was watching tacklejunky81 and he said some people have just put the line through the wiffle of the spool and not tie it         i would never do that

I do it sometimes. Never had a problem. Even with braid. It's called a noknot.

I've only got spooled 1 time in my life and that was from an estimated 90# Tarpon in Boca Grande Pass Fla. I don't worry about it for any fresh water fish.

Tie a uni, pull it tight and I'm good.

Argot knot is a square knot, easy to tie line onto a reel so use it.
