Bait Monkey Needs New Rod

Recommended Posts

So recently I was "fortunate" enough to get a Lew's BBZ-1 Pro Series Speed Spool at half price (retails at 200). Bait monkey made me do it. Except the reel is currently useless without a rod to use it with. I was thinking of making it a setup for single hook moving baits like spinnerbaits/bladed jigs/paddle tail swimbaits and maybe buzzbaits. I was wondering what power/action rods you guys use for these techniques( I was thinking something slightly over 7', Medium Heavy, Mod-Fast or Fast), and what a good rod would be for around a hundreds bucks? Some suggestions on line would be helpful too (I was thinking 15lb copoly, yay or nay?).

Dobyns fury 733 with 15 lb copoly or 40lb braid with a leader.

Definitely the Dobyns 733C or the 703C both are really nice.  Another rod most people do not think of but check out the Abu Garcia Ike series IKE 70-5. It is a 7 foot Medium action power series rod designed to fish single hook reaction bits like chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, and buzz baits. The rod sells for $129. I personally fish one of his rods and I like it a lot. It is a 6 ft 4 medium action "delay series" rod designed to fish jerkbaits. This is like a 6'8" rod but with a slightly shorter handle, it allows you to setup a cadence without hitting your arm. Each of the 15 Ike series rods were designed and optimized to do specific techniques. These rods are definitely on my radar for future purchases.

Thanks for the replies guys, I will take the 733C Fury into strong consideration. As far as line goes, is 15lb co-poly a good all around choice? I have never spooled a baitcaster with anything besides braid and on one reel, sunline sniper.  What's a good manageable copoly you guys like?

i like P Line floroclear which is a copoly line with a fluoro coating but not if I was going to use it for buzzbaits also, so I would go with 30 pound or 40 pound P Line or 832 braid and a leader or maybe a Suffix Siege in 14 pound test. That lays on a baitcaster pretty well and is about the same diameter as  say Stren mono in 14 pound test.

Get the 7'2" MH Daiwa Tatula for the price. Great deal.

I think I'm going to regret clicking that link, thank you though.

I have a HF Tatula and love it, that might be too good to pass up....kind of like the reel. Oh well, a 350 dollar setup for 210.

Have you ordered rods from them before? I'm just curious how well they package them.

Click that link and don't look back. They'll package in a sturdy tube for you. I have 2 Furys and 1 Tatula. Tatula all day for that price.

It is funny my wife is my main fishing partner, and she ADDICTED to smallmouth!!!  Because of this fact I have had the opportunity to fish some great water like Erie, Dale Hollow Lake, Center Hill Lake, Lake Anna VA, Lake Gaston, the Susquehanna River etc. We even fished the Bow River in Calgary Alberta for trout during our honeymoon.  She also loves to take fishing guides, I am truly blessed. The funny thing is a couple of years ago I asked her if she would rather have a diamond necklace for Christmas or another G Loomis rod... She chose the rod! So the Bait Monkey got her too! LOL.  Over half of the G Loomis rods in this house do not belong to me!

Come on up to Lk St Clair in May. I doubt you'll find a place that you could catch more quality smallmouth.

That lake is on our to do list actually. I lived on the Susquehanna River back in the nineties when it was in its heyday, Wow!  Then I went up to the town of Northeast on Lake Erie.  I saw my second 7 pounder caught there ( the first during a tournament on the Susqy.)  IN Tennessee I have been amazed at how many 5 to 7 pound smallies I have caught.  I even got a 7 pound Kentucky from a Tennessee lake. I have heard great things about your lake though. I just keep thinking what that 11.15 pound smallie must have felt like on the other end of the rod!  Billy Westmoreland must have spent his life and career in heaven on Dale Hollow Lake.
