My reel handle on a Citica spins freely when I tighten the drag. As I start to loosen it, it seems to bind slightly. Doesn't spin as freely. What do you suppose is going on? I need to add, I just put

Carbontex drag washers in four Citicas. This is the only one doing that.

One more question. Any tips for getting the gear set off the shaft?  Those things were really tight.

do some arm curls whimp!

in all seriousness, those gear sets are hard to get off over that lip. just pull

make sure you didnt put an extra washer under under the star drag. on top of or below the two cupped shaped washers. also make sure thr sleeve that you put over the drive shaft on top of the drag stack that sits encompassed by the AR bearing isn't upside down. that has to go on a certain way.

All four of them had another washer on top of the cupped washers. Also, I checked the tube and the notches are in the slots.

1. Check that you assembled everything correctly.  Sounds like something shifted when putting the crank side plate on.

2. You don't need to get the main gear off to swap out for Carbontex.  a little drop of oil on the shaft can help with binding.

3. There is supposed to be a washer on top of the cupped spring washers.

It's a two washer set. How would I get the bottom washer on?

Oh yeah, forgot about that.... My Chronarchs already have a Carbontex washer under there....

You can use a little bit of leverage under there, but be careful.  They do sometimes stick.  I use both hands, index and middle fingers under the gear, and my thumbs stacked on top of the main shaft.  If you don't get funky marks on your fingers, you're being too wimpy. ;)

For getting the gear set off the gear shaft I just use a small metal brush and clean the shaft, if that does not do the trick, you can usually find a little high metal and it can be carefully removed with a jewelers file.    The spring  washers can be installed either way it () )(  it won't make a difference, you just don't want them )) or ((.

Check to make sure you assembled with the drag washer between the  anti-reverse ratchet and main gear and not under the anti-reverse ratchet.     Also check and make sure that the anti-reverse ratchet is keyed to the drive shaft properly.

Good Luck

I just leave my reels basically alone, lubing the obvious points now and then.  They just keep working and working and working.  I'm thinking of lubing the drag washers as soon as I can find a source for the lube without the shipping being twice the cost of the lube.  In the meantime, they just keep working and working and working.
