Oversized Squarebills

Recently, oversized squarebills have gotten my attention and I'm looking to try them out. Most notably, an article in the recent Bassmaster magazine featuring Mark Menendez. Lures like the KVD 8.0, and the Lucky Craft Magnum 105 and 110's. I'm curious as to who is using these baits, where are you using them, and what are your opinions on these specific baits?

I've fished the SK 8.0 up here in MI with mixed results.  Done better with the 2.5 truth be told.  Doesn't mean the 8.0's a dud, just that I'm not real excited about it.  Got a box of them though, because I've got a problem.

I fished the LC 105 & 110's  "a Little" south of the border when they first came out.

I did not have much success with them either but in all fairness I didn't give them much of a chance.  As I remember, we got on a fluke bite and that was the end of it for the big crank bait.

The 8.0 is doable with big cranking gear.  Those LC baits are BIG.  You'll want to kick it up a notch when you tie those on.

And btw - the LC SKT 120 Mag is pretty ridiculous.  About pulled a hammy throwing that one  . . . .

I just recently started throwing the SK 8.0 as well.  its been ok and certainly helps eliminate some of the smaller bites I get.  I've heard it's a good pre-spawn bait so will have to wait a few months to really put it to use

Deps makes the evoke 2.0 and the bell knocker magnum. Both just shy of an ounce, cast like a dream, great action, and catch fish.

What line are you guys using for these?

I've got a 765CB, a Veracity 7'11" heavy winch, an Avid 7' heavy moderate, and a 795swb, so I'm not concerned about the weight and my rod.

I have an 8.0 and also the new Magnum squarebill from Academy. Only once has an actual target fish hit my 8.0, and she tossed it at the boat.

I throw mine on 20lb Big Game and a light swimbait rod. They get plenty deep still even on the heavy line.

I've got four of those 8.0 baits.  I've thrown a couple of them.  Never a bite, but that could be because I gave up on them after just a little bit.  I though I needed a John Deere tractor to reel them in.  I've since gotten a heavier rod that may be able to better handle the weight and wobble of these big things.  I'll try again, but not my favorite lure.
