What the hell

Recommended Posts

Hard to tell because I can't see them real plain but with that long pointed nose I would say gar. Don't know if y'all have gar in WV but here you see them swimming lazily in groups like that.

I thought gar at first.  One came by the boat and it was brown and orange looking.  Musky??

Will gar eat other species such as bass, trout and bluegill ??

Would bet on longnose gar.

Doubt chain pickerel, as I've never known them to school in numbers like those.

From what I know, most of the fish species in Esox are lone wolves and prefer their own space.

My first thought was carp. Depends on the angle.

Small grass carp. They school up and sit just below the surface like that all the time around here.

Yep.  And out of nowhere they'll scare the hell out of you when they start breaking the surface for seemingly no reason.

Don't kill them if you are on a private lake. Grass carp are often stocked to control vegetation and are usually sterile in such situations.

Grass carp do more harm than good. They spread the weeds more than control them and do very little to control the moss that most people buy them for.

Yes! They introduced grass carp into a reservoir over in Virginia. That introduction took care of the abundant submerged aquatic vegetation and the "near double digit largemouth bass" that lived there. Now the reservoir has neither! :(

BadBass, by the what I can see in your picture,  they kinda look like Gar. I've seen something similar in Summersville and Burnsville. I've got them in Burnsville.
