This year i began snelling knots on flipping hooks and im starting to wonder if im doing something wrong. Recently, ive broken off a few really good fish in T's and fun fishing and its happening at the knot. I know its the knot because im using 40lb braid to 20lb fluro leader and when i bring the line back to me, i see a shirivled up fluro leader end. 

So to tie my snell im making a loop on the top of the hook, facing down. Wrap 7-9 times toward me, put the line back through the loop and pull the two ends snug tight, and when i pull on the knot, everything seems tight and great. If i land a decent fish, lets say 3lbs, its fine, But it seems like when i lay into another one the knot is failing, i feel like i shouldnt have to re-tie after every decent fish.

 

Whats going on?

I've been meaning to re-order me some UV Knot sense knot glue but haent gotten around to it since it exploded on my deck in 90 degree weather this summer lol.

Quite true. I bought some Daiichi hooks that I had to stop 
snelling because there was a slight gap, but more important,
the closing of the eye was rough and cut the line.

Don't use FC leader or use a premium mono leader. Curled line end indicates the line slipped and broke at the knot. If the hook eye nicked or cut the line the end would not be curled.

There Isn't any reason to use FC leader in heavy cover.

This, if the eye is not welded shut or has a coating (like VMC hooks) it could pinch the line and easily break you off. A lot of the hooks I have I cannot snell for this reason. 

 

But like @@WRB said if it looks shriveled this was most likely not the case, knot may be pulling through and burning itself. With 7-9 wraps I don't see why this would happen though as long as you tied and cinched it down correctly.

I do use VMC hooks for flipping, how would the coating on the hooks cut the line? im snelling pretty much exactly how the guys does in the video, still dont understand how im breaking off

Are you using Ike VMC flipping hook with sealed eye?

Oh no, I meant the coating would help prevent that. I don't use VMC that much so I don't know how durable that coating is. I suspect if you are breaking off in the way you described it is not the hook itself that is the issue.

There's your problem.  You're doing it wrong.  DO NOT EVER EVER EVER cinch a fluorocarbon knot by pulling on the main line.  It is a surefire way to get a knot to fail.  See the animated version of this knot to snell correctly.  The last step, you pull on the TAG END to cinch.

Any knot with Flouro?  Or just the snell with flouro? 

Any knot with fluoro, or any other nylon, copoly, etc.  Never cinch a knot by pulling the main.  You might get away with it for a time, but it will eventually fail on you.
