I first bought an Abu Garcia Silver Max from Dick's sporting goods and it did not work correctly, the spool tension and he star drag were messed up. I sent the reel back in and they gave me another faulty reel in which the spool quit spinning and the star drag was not working. I sent the second reel back and they sent me another one that was faulty with a defective star drag and the spool wouldn't spin. All three of them quit working after one use. It's not me, all of my other baitcasting reels are Lew's and I have had zero problems with them. Abu Garcia'a customer service has been good up until now. I have spoken with their customer service department 3 times in regard to the 2nd reel that they sent and each time they promised a reel tech will contact me but it never happens. I feel like they are avoiding because they keep giving me junk. Maybe they don't make lefty reels with same quality as they do for right hand reels since lefties are not as common. I'm am not pleased at all with Abu Alexia. Anyone else have similar problems with Abu Garcia?

They have been good until the 3rd reel started messing up. I will call for the 4th time when I get off work. Hopefully they keep their word on a reel tech contacting me. Maybe 4 is a charm

They might want me sharing this, but here goes.  I got a Revo as a gift that was right-handed.  I prefer left-handed reels.  So I emailed Abu Garcia and explained my situation.  They exchanged the reel with no charge.

BTW, I thought I learned recently that Lews is made by Abu Garcia.  Yes?

Really? I didn't know that, my Lews reels are flawless. Hopefully I can get them to send me a Lews reel because I cant trust Abu Garcia reels.

Lews contracts with the same factory but they are separate business entities. ABU has been good with my dealings with them. even though the reel in question is an entry level reel, the likelihood of three lemons to the same consumer seems unlikely. Is it possible that that they are working but just not what you're used to?

I was def given 3 lemons. If I get another Abu reel it will have to be a revo, I would rather pay more than give the silver max another try.

Abu has been great to me. Reel parts and rod replacements. Perfect!

One rod I broke and I told them. They thanked me for being a loyal customer and sent me a new rod and it was an upgrade at that. The rod I broke was an IKE.. that was not in stock, they told me I could pick out any Villian 2.0 I wanted. I had the rod 3 days later.

The following week I bought another Villian 2.0. What a great rod design they are.

Any rod issue I had was resolved quickly and most were caused by UPS, but Abu fixed it. I can't say anything negative about them at all. I also lost parts when I took my 2nd gen Revo SX apart and they sent me the missing parts free of charge out of pitty. I don't buy many USDM Abu rods and reels anymore but the service as been top notch.

Administration of Abu products in this country falls under their parent company, Purefishing. I have had 4 Pflueger spinning reels and 3 Abu spinning reels, and all but one (a President 6925x were either defective right out of the box or proved to be so within 2 weeks, max. My opinion of Purefishing's rods is okay, but my opinion of their higher-line reels is ... well, ... bad. I have to say, though, that their customer service people have been GREAT. Wonderful people, and a lot of help. Too bad the product quality isn't as high. Needless to say, I am now Shimano/Daiwa. It's sad to see a good company go downhill.  jj

Abu and Lew's are made in the same factory in South Korea. I believe they use mostly the same parts. I've fished mostly Lew's and Abu and I'm come to the conclusion that Lew's just has better quality-control.

But on topic, I've never had an issue with their customer service, the woman on the line was not friendly and was very rude, but I can deal with that. Lew's on the other hand is top-notch. Almost as good as Dobyn's hehe

I have a gen 1 revo premier spinning reel that now has a broken stem after dropping my rod from about a foot off the ground.  I was bringing a few rods inside after a trip (holding them vertically). The legend tourney that had my revo on it slipped and dropped with the butt of the rod hitting the ground.  It was only about a foot off the ground and the reel itself never hit anything.  The "impact" snapped the reel stem.  I thought that was pretty extreme for a $299 reel. Especially one with the "nano shield" body that was supposed to make it 300x stronger than graphite... I contacted Abu about it and they wanted to charge me for the replacement part (about $65), repair ($30), and return shipping ($20).  Needless to say, it's still outta commission.  Suppose I could just buy the part and fix it myself...or just put that $$ towards something better.
