Father losing his sight

Featured Replies

First time poster, came for some advice. My dad has always been an avid Fisherman. So much so, that he retired to his favorite lake so that he can fish every day. This past year, his fishing was minimal due to the fact that he is losing his sight and has a hard time tying knots. He is too proud to solve the problem himself, so I am here to see if there are any products that can help him. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I deal with the same thing with my father. 55 years old and his eyesight isn't as good as it used to be. If I'm fishing with him, I'm tying all his knots. If I'm over visiting and he's going fishing without me, he'll have me tie up all his rods. If he goes fishing without me around, I'll hear about all the lures he lost because his knot wasn't tied properly.

For about the last ten years before my dad passed away (he was only 63 - May 2015), he had eye issues and his sight was affected by something called Fuch's Dystrophy which basically created a haziness or cloudiness in his vision.  He was also too proud to let me help out (and for good reason since he did teach me everything I know about fishing) and it frustrated me to the point that we would often bicker over me helping him since I could just tie the knot and we could be back to fishing.  While he sometimes let me help, he did often resort to using snap clips and did also let me tie knots for him when he needed.  Not too long before he passed, he had cornea transplants which did help.  I sure miss him and I would give anything to tell him today I would gladly help him out tying knots and clipping swivels!  Enjoy your time on the water with your dad!

How about a threader that the fly-fisherman use for tiny flies?

https://www.amazon.com/Design-CF-602-Spare-Threaders-Regular/dp/B00H4ETHLS/ref=pd_lpo_200_tr_t_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=CMTXNXD8YV3PAHVKB2XY

He'll need to learn a basic but strong knot once he gets the hook/lure threaded on but he should be able to do that by feel with enough practice.  Even something like a simple double overhand knot, while maybe not the strongest, will at least get him out on the water.

A while back I came across this "Tauten Line Welder."  It is pretty pricey, and I can't seem to find many reviews about it, but your father is definitely the demographic they are looking to sell to.  A lot of people make fun of the product, in fact I may get some heat for posting about it on here, but this seems like a good product for your father, if it works.

First and foremost is your dad getting good medical treatment? Loss of eye sight can usually be treated if done early, several things can be the cause. Sight aides like magifying glasses help a lot, look into 4X fly tieing glasses for example.

Good luck and hope your dad can enjoy fishing, you are his best aid.

That would be you and your time.

My dad 74 years old,and still fishes tournaments. I will change out line, tie leaders on,etc. What ever he needs ill do it.

As stated above, you could try what WRB mention :)

Sorry to hear. Guess I'd first get a check-up to rule out glaucoma and diabetes. Then, lots of good advice above. Magnifiers and knot tyers are out there. Good luck. Hope he's back on the water soon.

Over-priced much?  Not giving you a hard time, but it seems to me that company is definitely trying to take advantage of being a monopoly of one.  I'd be willing to bet they would be making a huge profit at 1/4th that price.  Replacement cartridges are also exceedingly expensive....and probably where the real money is to be made.....like razor blade refills.  Also appears the user is very limited in their choice of lines.

Yup...find a useful product and then stick it to everyone while you can.

BTW, nice name.
