When Florida LMB were introduced in San Diego city lakes Lower Otay was the first to be open to public fishing. Everyone including me had high expectations that would soon change, FLMB were very difficult to catch compared to the more aggressive northern LMB.

I joined the Pisces bass club to learn how to catch FLMB. The secret was live bait, the successful members like Bill Murphy all used live crawdads, mud suckers, big Canadian nightcrawlers  and waterdogs.

I simply didn't have the pacients to double anchor and wait for the bass to find my live bait. Live bait fishing was the way to catch big FLMB and I did manage to catch a lot of them, but anchoring wasn't something I could do. I fished live crawdads like I fish jigs slowly moving them and making lots of casts at several locations. It was during this time period that I discovered hair jigs with pork trailers and big soft plastic worms worked to catch big FLMB when fished like alive crawdad. Now I could move around and locate bass before slowing down to catch them. Being inpatient paid off!
