I see Tackle Warehouse lists the weight of the Zoom horny toad as 1/8oz. I imagine unless you are using a 1/4oz weighted swimbait hook, you can't cast these on MH or Heavy casting gear. I'm curious to know your guys set ups for this technique (lure brand, hook type - weighted? Single screwlock hook or frog hook with 2 points?) as it's something I'd like to get into this summer. I use a MH-F rod with 40lb braid for my hollow body frogs and would like to use this set up for the soft body frogs as well.

Just slip 3 or so of these in where the hooks come out and adjust to suit adding more or less.

I fish them on a 7' MH/F casting rod with 50lb braid and have no issues with casting them plenty far. I'm going to guess that's an approximate weight on them, because they're a pretty dense bait.

You should be just fine. I've had no problem casting them with a MF/ F setup with the weightless screw lock hook that was specifically designed or them.

Not sure where the 1/8 oz weight is coming from but I would venture to guess they are closer to 3/8 oz IMO. I can cast them weightless on a 5/0 hook as far as I can cast any other weightless plastic like a senko or a fluke.

 

Without a hook, a Horny Toad weighs approximately 1/2 oz.

I just weighed a Horny Toad and a Stanley Ribbet. I would have guessed the HT was heavier because I can more easily cast it, but they're both 3/8 oz on my wife's small food scale. I have a MH spinning combo with 20 lb braid that I'll use with lighter baits like the Snag Proof Original Frog.

When you weight lightvweight objects try weighing 10 and divide the total weight by 10.

Most home scales are not accurate enough unless they weigh in 10ths of grams. 28.35 grams = 1 oz, divide the total wright in grams by 28.35 to = onces. 

Don't have any soft plastic Horny Toads to weigh, so can't add to this thread.

On the other hand, a high percentage of anglers are also hunters who own a powder scale for reloading.

Powder scales are graduated in "grains" which is 1/437 OZ (subsequently rounded to the nearest 1/16 oz)

This comes in real handy when comparing the weight of hooks, where there wouldn't be any rounding off.

I don't know why but I love this. "Mean Toad Weight" just sounds so epic to me. Could be right off an Herpetology message board or a "Battletoads" meme. Nope, good old bass resource. Haha. Now we need the data for the "mean, median and mode" of all the toad!

Add 1/16 oz for the 3/0 hook and the mean toad weighs in at 3/4 oz, no wonder they cast easily with a MH rod!

I have a little scale that will weight in grams or decimal ounces and really was surprised when I started weighing lures and plastics. I keep meaning to make a thread as a place to collect them as a resource for people.  I know I have lots of lures that I bought only to discover they were too heavy/too light to use the way I wanted them too.  One of these days I will be motivated and bored enough to do it.  

Zoom horny toad = 14 grams (1/2 oz.) ( 216 grains )

SK Rage Toad = 15 grams ( 231.4 grains )

Keitech Crazy Flapper = 16 1/2 grams (254.6 grains)
