Want to buy a Minn Kota Ulterra but wondering what happens if your battery dies or the Minn Kota has a malfunction and you can't electronically/auto stow the Ulterra. Obviously this would be a problem if you need to stow it to ride back to the landing or get it on your trailer. 

 

Is there some type of manual over-ride that you can use to stow it that doesn't use electricity?

Yes there is a manual override for stow and deploy

After I read the FAQ's page that John linked to, I've got the impression there still needs to have power to the motor to stow it.  I'm usually a skeptic concerning new technology.  I've got an interest in purchasing a new Terrova but am leary of the self-stowing models.

Seems pretty clear to me....

The manual override seems demanding. You'd better have a flat and Phillips head screwdriver on your boat. I know most people carry some spare tools on their boats though. And once you do it the motor won't work again until you bring it to an authorized dealer. That sucks. 

 

 

 

I do not have the Minn Kota Ulterra - I have a Fortrex.  

My decision had little to do with the actual subject of this thread.

However,  after reading through it, between trying to decipher those instruction, to pulling off the balancing act that's required up on the bow to actually performing that evolution - the whole thing seems like one big PIA. 

Definitely motivation enough to ensure that if at all possible, I didn't run my juice down to zero.    

 

I guess something similar would be the Minn Kota Talons that also have a manual override system. 

It requires a specific but common size wrench or socket & ratchet to "hand Crank" the spike up into the base unit. 

If one had that at the ready they're good to go as there's no need to take anything apart to access the override as the nut head is exposed.

Exactly. You'd think they'd make it easier.

 

 

If you're in big waves and your battery dies or you have an electrical problem and need to stow your Ulterra so that you can hightail it to the landing you could be in big trouble attempting to hang over the bow of the boat and use 2 different type of screwdrivers to manually stow your Ulterra.

If your really that worried about it not stowing away, don't get the Ulterra.  Just get a manual stow and deploy model like the Fortrex or better yet, the new Ultrex.

The easiest thing to do is mount the Ulterra on a MKA-21 quick disconnect mount.  Then all you would need to do pull the pin and lift it straight up if it malfunctions.

I have my Terrova mounted that way now. Pull the u shaped pin and lay it in the boat. Problem solved.
