Making my own mold

Featured Replies

Just started on this today since it's getting closer to a good time for me to start fishing.

I think it's looking pretty good so far. Just poured to top so soon I'll see how well this actually turns out.

Finished product. I think it turned out pretty d**n well. Just a small pin ***** of an air bubble. But other than that looks pretty good for my first go round.

That looks really good. Keep it up! The real test will be when you pour the plastisol. Lets see how them baits come out!

That is a great mold to make. Stick bait molds are very expensive!

Yea I plan on pouring this weekend for tests I'll post pic of original and repour. The molds are nearly 3x as much as what I pain to make my own.

Now when I pour do I use a rubber band or somthing to keep the 2 halves together?

That is a good question, usually you would use clamps with metal molds. With POP molds I guess you can try clamps you would get at a hardware store just be careful not to crush the POP.

A rubber band won't apply enough pressure.

OK that makes sense. Just a couple plastic claps it is. Thanks.

I use trigger grips cause I can adjust the tightness. Sorry was at work before, forgot to be specific.

OK so I poured just 1 and it turned out pretty well. Went to do 4 on my next pour and it didn't go very well, do I need some sort of vent hole on my mold? I've tapered the opening to allow for the air to come out? I pretty much got a half worm till it started to look full so I stopped and the end product wasn't as desired.

Maybe I'm just pouring to fast? Trying to get a nice steady pour and doing so before the plastic starts to cool isn't as easy as I thought

Try cutting a small vent into the bottom and hold the mold at an angle when pouring. Look at how the aluminum ones are vented and copy it for starters.

I'll have to look into other ways to vent it

I think when you are pouring, the plastisol is cooling to much,In the aluminum molds they use an injector to force the plastisol into the mold.Maybe try having your plastisol a little hotter.

Did you seal the pop with epoxy or mod podge first?  did you spay it with some form of oil or pam before you poured?  the plastisol could be getting stuck on the walls and building up making it harder for the res to keep going to the bottom of the mold..

Here is the two piece mold I made out of Bondo resin that turned out better than I expected for a first try.

The mold should be heated when you have 2 halves fasten together and each cavity needs to be vented into over flow pockets or out the sides. Hand pours are usually open molds, that is why hand pours have a flat side with detail in the cavity.

To force hot plastisol down into a closed cavity it takes pressure and that is known as injection molds made from aluminum alloy so it can be clamped and heated.
