Braided line and old Zebco reels

Featured Replies

Well, I found our one thing the braided line does not work for me! I don't like the way it cast Mono cast better and farther for me . What do yawl think?

Braid is not recommended for use in old spincast reels.

There's newer models out that are braid compatible.

I bought a new zebco bullet out of curiosity and put 30 lb braid on it, and while it did 'work', it still twisted the line and since the spool does not oscillate up and down the braid ends up digging in on itself and will end your cast abruptly.

Not worth $100 for braid HOWEVER it is hands down the best spincast reel ever made. The retreival ratio is excellent. If you were only going to run 10 lbs mono or fluoro it would be a nice reel to play around with.

For people who refuse to use anything but spincast, pfleuger makes some decent options, and the abumatic stx is ok too. All modern zebco 33 variants i've used are barely acceptable in build quality and performance.

Not too many of these here, though I still have a vintage 33 that I use for guests that don't really know how to fish.  It works fine.

I bought a vintage 70's model on ebay and I need to recondition it. I find the 80's and 90's models are my favorite.

Well, I guess I don't know how to fish, Have been fishing the old 33s and 888s for over 50 years.

That's called twisting my words.  I was speaking about WHAT I DO WITH THEM, not what you do with it.  I still use my 33 to catch a bass or two to help new anglers see how to do it.  This site is about teaching others how to fish, not trolling for insults.

Not trying to start anything , I guess I took it wrong

My point was that I'm still using a 30+ year old reel.  Mine is a "33 Classic" which would date it back to the mid 80s.  I know of a couple Daiwa Goldcasters that were mine that are still in service.  The Omega line appears to be well made as well.  I wouldn't put braid in any that aren't specifically designated by the manu as designed for braid.

It works fine on my " pocket fisherman".....

I tried 15lb Sufix 832 in a Daiwa Goldcast last year and it didn't like it at all.

I tried braid on a pflueger I have... it was not pretty!

Well,  I tried an open face reel about 30 years ago, and did not like it. I bought  another open face one 3 weeks ago for Crappie, and am not took with it, I guess I will try one of the bait casters. But I do catch s few nice fish on the old Zipco's . I am sure I am limiting the ways I can catch fish with what I am using. But those old reels are bulletproof

I could be wrong, but I suspect you will not like a baitcaster either.  It might be one of those "stick with what works" things.

I caught my pb on a spincast, the bass don't care what kind of equipment you're using. I have since stepped up to a better spinning reel and baitcaster, but I still haven't beat my pb.
