Lightning Rod Shock

Featured Replies

I just went to Wal-Mart on my lunch break and picked up a 6'6" LRS casting rod, MH/F, lure weight: 1/4oz. to 1-1/4oz. for $10 on clearance. I won't be able to fish it for a while as the ponds and lakes up here in VT are still frozen over for the most part, what can I expect from this rod? I'm guessing that it would be good for small topwater baits like spooks, poppers etc., maybe jerk baits...anything else, does it have any parabolic bend to it that you could use it for crank baits too? I mean for $10 you can't go wrong but it would be interesting to find out what others think about this rod and its tendencies/capabilities, does it fish to it's power ratings? Thanks for any input!!!

I have the 7' version of that rod. I have it set up with a Quantum "Burner" 7:1 reel and 40 lb braid for  topwater and frogs. It has worked very well for that, but I don't know how it would handle the lighter weight lures. I have thrown my 130 whopper plopper with it, but never lighter than 1/2 oz lure so far.

For your $10 it is a good enough rod, and when I first bought mine I used it for stripers as well.

I haven't used mine in "feel" situations yet, so I really don't know how sensitive it is.

I'd use it for jerkbaits and topwaters like you said. I picked a few up for a steal a few months ago and they're nice rods for the money.

Nice find, now seems to be the time where everyone is finding deals at Walmart!!

I found 4 on sale at a Walmart in Claremont nh for 5$ each over the weekend....2 6'6 m/f a 6'6 mh/f and the 7' mh/f. They feel like a decent rod especially at 5$ ?

I have the 7' MH and I used mine for every technique. It is a very versatile rod for very little amount of money.

I found a few of those Shock rods for $10 and some Garcia Vengance rods for $13. Took them to work and the guys scarfed them up within a half an hour. I sold them for those prices I just wanted to pass on a crazy find and I knew these rods were better than what they are most likely using. I thought about keeping a Vengance cause it feels light for a MH. One of the guys had to have it so I let it go. I have more than enough rods. I thought the Shock rods could stand to have another guide but what do I know I'm not a Rod builder. Good find and with a reel you can get a pretty cheap combo. Good luck with it.

i have three shocks and a regular. proud of it too.

I think the lightning rod shock is a great rod for the money.  Especially if they are on clearance.  Maybe the best deal on fishing rods going.

I have the 7' ML spinning rod.Wish i could say i got it for 5 bucks! Sill worth the 40-50 they go for.

To me the bend seems to be more in the top 1/3 of the rod but they'd serve for a crankbait rod for something like squarebills to mid depth baits.

How about lipless cranks? I mean most of what I have are squarebills but I'd like to do some lipless RES too.

I actually have a Shock that I use for lipless baits.

I like the 7 ft medium heavy for spinnerbaits and traps,I like the softer tip.
