rod and reel covers?

Featured Replies

Are rod and reel covers a waste of money? I was looking at them so my lines don't get tangled in the truck or when walking and also help protect them a little bit. I seen cabelas has a universal cloth type one and also the net type ones but the net ones only come in 6ft that I seen and I have a 7ft rod but its a 2pc so would it be feasible to break it down and slide it in a cover? just looking for a way to protect my investments as the bed of the truck isn't all that great when it comes to being nice to gear.

I have some for all of my combos. They aren't on them all the time but when I am taking a few rods with me in my car the rod covers really do help with the lines not getting tangled. The reel covers I primarily use when I store my rods. Right now they are down in my dad's basement (woodworking shop) on the ceiling. So I can't imagine the dust that would build up if I didn't have them.

I cover them.....it is just easier when moving them around

I like the Stick jackets that TW sells.  The are good quality and micro guide tip tops doesn't poke through the nylon when you out them on the rod.

I use the cheap ones from BPS, does the job.

whats about reel covers? if I had a 35 president pflueger what size reel cover would fit that?

If you are OCD about the cosmetic condition of your reels, then covers are a must. They also help boost the resale value of the reels if you do decide to upgrade one day.

Rod covers are an absolute MUST for me.  I keep 8-12 rods in my car/boat at a time.  The covers save an immense amount of time previously spent untangling them.  I've used about a half dozen different brands.  You get what you pay for.  You can get the BPS brand cheapest.  They work....BUT...they have the loosest weave and you WILL get hooks in stuck in them at some point.  Ones with tighter weaves, like Stick Jacket and Rod Glove will cost a couple bucks more, but will snare fewer hooks.  The downside is that the tighter weave means that when you do sink a barb, it is much harder to get out.

I strongly suggest you take a look at Rosie's Rod Covers at fishyaker.com.  Young gal makes 'em herself - probably going to put herself through college.  She gets $10 shipped per.  The huge upside (besides helping an entrepreneur) is that these are solid cloth -- No snags!  They really are a better product.

PSA:  All the mesh ones I've ever lost over the side do NOT float.  Not sure about Rosie's....haven't dunked one...yet

As to reel covers, I've only ever owned one -- and my wife uses it as a spinnerbait case.  Never saw the need for them, myself.

I use both on mine. Reel covers keep dirt from getting in your reel if you happen to drop them.

I like the reel covers from TW. They have good padding and fit all my reels well.

As far as rod covers I bought some from amazon.

I absolutely do not think they are a waste of money. Ever since getting reel covers my reels have been kept in prime condition. The reason I got rod covers was specifically for the car. Putting the rods in my car sometimes can be a pain. With the rod covers the rods slide right in, and don't get hung up on each other or anything like that. Keeps my guides from getting bent.

Exactly why I got them ----
