Extra spinning spools

Featured Replies

Do many of you guys buy extra spools for quick change from mono/fc/braid?

Cheaper option than having 3 rigs......?

Not seeing them on TW...

It's easiest to buy them direct from the manufacturer.  What reels are you looking to get spools for?

I have a drawer full of spare spools that I've never used. I usually take 3 or 4 pre-rigged set-ups with the line sizes I want to use. Have never been in a situation where I said to myself, "darn it, wish I had an 8# spool in my tackle bag!" :)

Three of my five spinning reels have spare spools. Ive never used one. Spooled them up with fresh line every year for several years. Finally stopped doing that.

My reason is I only have one spinning setup

i have spare spools for all of my reels as I have way more rods than reels and the reels jump around so I like to be able to switch # test and line type. always at home before the trip however.

That makes perfect sense to me. When I go on a trip, I normally take one spinning combo, unless I'm going trout fishing. I take all spinning for that.

I spooled up my extra spools with different line than the main spool. Usually one step lighter, just in case. When I took one spinning rod, I took along the correct spare spool. When I took more than one, I took along all the correct spare spools. Never used one. I stopped filling them with fresh line every year, and stopped carrying them with me.

When it comes to spare line-spools, I'm the World's Worst!

I started out with good intentions but have yet to deploy 'one' spare spool in the field.

Finally, that charade is history   :rolleyes7:

Most of my fishing is wading in rivers. I used to carry a couple of rods then thought hey I will take one and a couple of spools. Now I carry one with no spare spools and change my leader as needed.

When it was standard for reels to come with spare spools, I always carried them. If I got a big wind knot, It was faster to change spools than to deal with the knots. Since I always use braid, I generally have the same line on every spool.

I've always get xtra spools for my reels and use them. I buy a spinning reel and 2 or 3 spools. Braid with a leader has cut down on that need some, but not entirely. Within a single trip I'll often carry a range of line weights and sometimes types. I also fish from shore and float tube so I'm limited in what I can carry.
