Casting Rod for skipping jigs

Featured Replies

I'm not real familiar with what to look for in a rod for skipping jigs.  I know I'm going to pair it with a tatula sv lined with 17-20# cxx and I know I want a 6'6" most jigs will be 3/8 with occasional 1/4&1/2 oz thrown in. The trailer will depend on the day. Mostly want this rod for skipping docks with maybe an occasional laydown. Most the lakes i fish are highly developed so not alot of trees in the water.  So there's the details now here's the question mh or heavy. Mod fast or fast or extra fast

Never understood why people want to skip with casting gear... With the relatively short distance you're fishing in, it's probably 20x easier to skip with a spinning setup.

But you do know what opinions are like NYBasser...

You ever try to horse a 6 pounder out from under a dock with a spinning set up?  1/10. Would not recommend.

Hey every thread needs that one guy that says something that has nothing to do with the original posted question it's all in the fun of be in on these sites

I do it with both. But i gotta say its fairly easy to horse in a fish from under a dock using a 6'8 medium heavy fast rod using 30lb braid on a spinning rod

Do you hear the drag whine in your sleep or are you using a 3000/4000 sized reel with the drag locked down?

I use either a 4000 or 3000 you are correct. Drag almost locked down but not all the way. Just enough to hear it on the hookset

Practice the loop cast keeping the jig close to the water surface and don't try to cast over 10 to 15 yards. Most anglers think you need a hard fast cast...you don't. Adjust the reel so the jig falls and hits the ground without over running, the spool should stop on it's own.

Why... most spinning rods are used for lighter line and baits. I can see a spinning rod for say a wacky senko but not so much a 1/2oz jig plus trailer. That's about 3/4oz total weight and you will be using a much heavier line with that. Not to mention a heavier powered rod. I own 1 spinning combo and it's for finesse techniques only. I can tell you for sure I'm not tying on a 1/2oz jig to it.

Ok lol back to the question at hand mhor h mod fast or ex fast for a rod we got a little off subject... I don't want to use spinning gear because I'm trying to limit my number of rods in my boat

I would choose a MH and fast action but since there is no standard for action across different brands I will quote Andy Montgomery and say find the rod with an 80/20 action. 80percent backbone 20percent tip. This is a good definition of fast action in my opinion

I like that cause it right one company's fast is another ex fast

Not all casting gear is the same.  The Daiwa SV spools make skipping easy.

Can say the same about spinning gear, not all spinning gear is the same. I use a 6'3" med-heavy rod to skip docks and I do just fine pulling fish out of them. You don't need an 3000 or 4000 size reel to pull fish out of docks, a 2500 is more than enough.
