Line irritation?

Featured Replies

Okay, not sure this is the proper forum for this but it IS about fishing line so here goes. My wife's pointer finger that she uses to flip the bail back on her reel (spinning) and release the line with has these little bumps all over it right where the line passes over it. They don't hurt or itch they just don't look good. Could she be allergic to fluorocarbon? She only gets these during fishing season and when she stops fishing they clear up. Just wondered if anybody else out there experiences this type of reaction and what they do to combat it?

Is she allergic to fluoride? You sure it's not just a blister. That's all I could think of.  Switch to another line, and see if it goes away.

Agree with @J Francho, switch out the line and see

if it goes away. Try a straight mono like Trilene XL, or

a non-fluoro coated copolymer.

They do look like little blisters almost. She's tried popping them before and I think some clear liquid comes out but I told her to stop as she'll just irritate them more.

Sounds like a plain old blister to me.  But I'm not a doctor.

If you find that she is allergic to it, put some aloe on it right after she gets done fishing.

But use the aloe straight from the plant itself, not some aloe extract product.

Cut the plant open and apply it. It'll clear it up quick with minimal itching.

She could try wearing latex or nitrile finger cots, but it's cheaper to simply switch to a different line.

try getting her a spincast or an underspin reel and tie her knots for a couple trips to see if they go away.

I mean, the fastest way to check is to have her tie a stand of floro around her wrist for an afternoon and see what happens.  That would rule out abrasion or something in the water as the cause.

Anything is possible, but I'd be shocked if she was allergic to fluorocarbon. More likely either something in the water that she is coming in contact with via the line or simply irritation to line rubbing and use. Guessing it might happen no matter what line she used.

You aren't fishing 3 mile island, are you?

Nope, Sunset Lake, VT :)

If she flips the bail with that finger, she could be allergic to whatever material that bail is made of. Whatever metal?

Or like you said the line.

She can get some fishing gloves. There are some inexpensive ones that may help her. There are a few brands that make full finger gloves instead of the cut offs.

That is a good point about the bail metal.  If it is like a chrome coating it could be it, that is an extremely common allergy.  But most women figure that out at a young age from a reaction to costume jewlery.

The index finger is used for everything and more than likely contacting any attractants being used which can cause skin irritation. She could wear a band aid to protect the finger tip until it heals.

I get those in warm weather. Some kind of allergy. If they are bad, hydrocortisone helps.

Nah, they only show up when she starts fishing and they go away after the season ends.

Hahaha...the thing is, if she's interested in something the purse strings will open up...if not, they tighten up significantly .

does the line rest on her distal interphalangeal joint (the crease between top and middle phalanx)? if so, have her lay the line in the middle part of the top phalanx, inline with the bottom of her fingernail if that makes sense. on the meat - not the crease.
