Topwater in the rain

Featured Replies

My dad and I hit the local over-pressured public lake in the evening on Saturday during some rain since the crowds would be all gone. I primarily fished a hollow-body frog and my dad fished a weightless t-rigged senko. It was a chilly evening, but the fish were still hitting topwater. I caught a few on the frog (missed a few more) and was having a blast. Had a one boil on my frog and told my dad to cast in there with his senko. Sure enough he hooked up and it was a nice solid bass in the 18-inch range. Ended up losing the biggest one of the night right before it got too dark for us to see. Wish I could get out more during the week to fish topwater, such a rush.

Top water has got to be the absolute best way to catch bass....IMHO

@Will Wetline  I haven't had a chance to use my spook yet. Can't wait to try it out. Nice fish!

I have a great hollow frog, but never have much luck with it. Waiting to hit up some night fishing soon with the canoe and see if I can snag a few night monsters. I suck at remembering what brands I buy, so I can't say, but he's a good size frog. Guess that's why I haven't had much luck yet....lol.

EDIT: This guy Lunkerhut Lunker Green Tea Frog

My "go-to" is a silver and black 4inch Husky Jerk Rapala. I never get skunked using that lure, even if it's one fish the whole day, I will always get something on it. ( I know, not top water...lol)

I do love my jitterbugs though. Use those right at dusk in the coves near my house, loud as heck, but attract some nice fish!

I've got the same lunkerhunt frog, I'm not a big fan, I don't get many hits on it, and when I do, most of the time they tend to grab the legs. I prefer the booyah pad crasher.

Rip the legs off and replace them with a skirt.  Much better that way, I do that with all of my pocket frogs.

Skirts, huh? How would I attach the skirt to the frog?

I've never met a frog with no back legs and a skirt, but if they bite it, I'll do it.... :)

The biggest bass I have caught the last few years was on a buzzbait during a light drizzle . Love top waters during a summer rain .

@scaleface I've been waiting for the right time to use my buzzbait. The lake I fish from shore has too many weeds on the surface so I prefer a hollowbody frog. Can't wait for vacation this August. Will be hitting the topwater hard.

Its really hard to beat a top water bite :occasion14:
