I have caught a couple of huge snappers and have an almost foolproof method to getting my lure back.

The tools you need are as follows;

  1. A small stick or something wood/plastic that you don't like too much.
  2. Good pliers
  3. Calm nerves.

Get the turtle boat side or into shallow water, hopefully where he still has to swim.  Holding your line tight, use the stick to lightly tap the snapper on the head, he will bite the stick and hang on to it.  Lightly tug on the stick to keep his interest up while dropping the line and grabbing your pliers. Remove your lure while keeping the turtle mad as hell at that stick.  Once the lure is free drop the stick.  You have your lure back, the turtle has your stick, everyone wins.

I have caught several nice size ones over the years. You set the hook and it feels like a rock until it starts moving.  If its hooked in the mouth I just donate the lure to the turtle.  They can strike fast!

Had a smallish snapper hit my jig once under a cheese mat.  Flipped in and saw movement and boom!  Fought like a bass pinned against a mat.  Thought I had a double digit bass!

A couple good yanks and he let go.

100 fish days are not uncommon here, especially during the winter when fish group up. I've had 3 that I can think of this year and will surely have more late this year.

I've caught many snappers, they're never fun to deal with.

50 to 100 fish days used to not be uncommon on the Columbia when I lived out there in the spring and sometimes late summer.  Shasta and Orville used to be the same for spots....amazing.  I remember one ten day period on those last two lakes where I went through over 100 old ugly tubes from Dry Creek on spots.  Hands were so sore.  Don't know how many I caught per tube but it was crazy good.

I have had some great days wading for smallies where I have caught around 100 fish (I started counting by putting a pebble in my pocket every 5 fish).  They were a mix of small smallmouths and large redbreasts, but it was a blast either way.  The first time I happened I remember the fish coming so fast that I shopped bothering to "land" them.  I pinched my barbs down and would fight the fish over to where I was standing, tag it with my hand, then slack the line and let them pop off while still in the water.

I remember getting crazy number of both species from pools no larger than a hot tub.  I wonder now if by not removing them from the water I somehow made them more willing to lit the lure a second time?  A few times I have had smallies jump, spit my lure, then hit it again the second they both re-entered the water.

Come to the Everglades during low water periods and you will have a decent chance of catching +100 bass in less than 6 hours of fishing time. Its like the bass are in berserker mode and they will attack anything that moves and can fit in their mouths, including  a bare hooked worked quickly on the surface.
