Any thoughts on buying used vs new fish finders? 

 

I found a good deal and they say not used much.

I owned a Fishing Buddy unit like that some time ago to use on a float tube... it wasn't very useful.  I wouldn't spend my money on another one.  Are you wanting a unit to put on a boat?

Canoe

That unit is battery powered hieroglyphics.  With lots of shortcomings.  A portable Helix 5 or HDS 5 while it costs more will be way better in terms of reliability and performance.  In a canoe with that post hanging down it will cause all sorts of drag and catch debris in the water OR you have install it whenever you stop.  The D cell batteries go dead pretty quickly.

I used to have a *humminbird* fishing buddy... I liked it.

Nothing wrong with buying used, I've sold some graphs. There aren't many reviews online for this fishfinder and the ones I found are mixed leaning more toward the negative. For me, that would be a reason to pass. Are you able to fabricate a portable mount for a transducer that you can clamp to the canoe and use a regular graph rather than a Fishin Buddy?

If the unit works when you pick it up, you're good to go.

 

On choice of unit, that one is really not suitable for much past the very basics...I'd hang one one a canoe for a river trip, but not much past that.

Forgot a thought about the unit working when you pick it up:

 

Most people don't have a way to run a fish finder off the boat...but you don't want to have to uninstall it after they show you it works. 

 

I have a power supply that plugs into a standard 110 outlet (so I can do updates in the house).

 

Handy to have.

There is no GPS puck but you can buy one and have the ability to mark waypoints. Otherwise. it's the mount,transducer, power cord, and head unit

Good choice!

Austin, if you are running a trolling motor you can mount the transducer on the motor housing.  Just zip tie the cable to the shaft. No need to make up an extra bracket and figure out attachment points.
