problem pulling boat on trailer

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have been having problems pulling my boat onto the trailer.  The boat appears to be going on straight.  But when it stops, I try to use the motor to "horse" it to the front of the trailer.  Sometimes this works, but sometimes, I have to back the boat off and try again.

I have the trailer so the wheel wells are just out of the water.  Is it possible the trailer needs to be further in the water?  Is there a way to determine the proper placement of the trailer in the water?

Also, is it possible the bunks are not angled correctly?  They appear to be fairly flat; not angled.  Thanks

Larry

every trailer will be different but if it is a baaaboat then usually i leave a couple inches of the bun kboards outta the water that puts my fenders about 3 inches above the waterline...       every ramp will be different also             the best advice is to practice    go to the ramp when it is empty and just keep practicing till you find the3 sweet spot.. bring a buddy along so it is easier to have him move the truck for you ;)

Every trailer is different and every ramp is different.

Puting the trailer further in the water is ussally the wrong thing to do. Less trailer in the water.

Look at the placement of your bunks when the boats is sitting right they can be against 1 strack or sitting on 1 or a bad angle. Just get a couple cement blocks and 4x4 slide under your boat and use your trailer jack to lift off the boat. do the back then the front.

Your mast and winch can be the wrong hieght and the boat can be to far on the trailer just a good look will show these problems.

guide on side rollers are a great add-on too.

I agree. That was the first thing I added to my trailer when I bought it.

Like they said trailers can be different. I've only owned one boat and it is a flat bottom jon boat so take it for what it is worth. Even so the biggest problem I've run into is the ramp not being steep enough to get deep enough w/o backing the van into the water.

I have to regularly push my boat most of the way off just to get it off the trailer at one particular lake.

I've had trouble when putting the boat on the trailer just from not backing down deep enough with the trailer. Most often a little too deep is not as big of a deal as too shallow. If you have the trailer too deep you can have the driver inch the vehicle forwad a little and often the boat will pick up right where it belongs. If I'm off a little I just winch it the rest of the way.

Their have been times when I swore that the trailer was square only to find out that it wasn't.

I tied to show you some pics of my side boards and my bottom bunker boards. If you must have a roller have it where it catches the bow before it gets to the bow catch. If you have to much trailer in the water you will never get it right. if it will not go on stright you have a bunker board problem and they need adjustment.  For thought you can shime up the rear of the board that may help dont go over a 1/2 inch.

hope this helps

those self centering rollers with the spiral grooves work surprisingly well.
