Looks like a largemouth to me. Debated it being a spot due to colors but it's lower jaw extends past the eye so I'm going with LMB....final answer

I think this is your answer. That's the typical thing I look for if coloration is not clear. Largemouth are called that specifically due to the jaw when closed being under or past the eye. Smallmouth it will be in front of the eye. If the coloration looks very largemouth, but the jaw does NOT extend under/past the eye, it is most likely a spotted bass.

Looks like a spotted bass to me, the markings below the lateral line being the telling characteristic. I think the reason the jaw is coming back to the edge of the eye is because the fish is being curled slightly in the picture

The reason I asked where the op caught the bass is to help identify it. To me this looks like a Suwannee bass or possibly a Shoal bass by the coloration and head stripes.

another vote for spot. did you feel his tongue?

i would be curious to see if it was a largemouth smallmouth hybrid

Too green to be a mean mouth.  Usually meanies are brown like smallmouth but have the longitudinal line  and stripes of the largemouth
