Can anybody tell me if there is something that is supposed to sit below the small drive gear pictured? My screw driver is pointing at the area. The reason i ask is because the drive gear itself has a circular ring/groove on top one side. Schematics show nothing.

I think that's where the schematic goes...

Again, schematic does show anything on any of the 1000-8000 models. The schematic also doesnt show 3 shims that should be in there as well. Hence...why I’m asking.

That's the idle gear that sits on top of the worm gear shaft that slows the oscillation down? Match it up with the worm gear and see if the wear pattern matches the top of the worm gear.

Yes that's the idle gear. The circular pattern doesn't match up /w the worm gear.

Not the same size as the portion that I circled in blue? Screenshot_20171112-200205.thumb.jpeg.1e6fea7a53a60bcebcb03773e11bf803.jpeg

If not then it's probably just a shim washer that goes between the top of the worm gear and idle gear.

nope. The etched circle in the idle gear is larger than the diameter of the levelwind that butts up against the idle gear itself. Generally there are just rub marks where a shim or washer sits but the idle gear seems to have a circle just barely etched into one side as if a small ring is supposed to sit in it. Just can't find anything about it.

Yes that mark looks too deep to be a wear mark since there is not much downward pressure on the worm gear shaft.

So what was the problem/solution?

Gears weren't aligning correctly when reeling. If you flipped the AR off and back reeled, the reel was then smooth as can be. After way too long of re-shimming the main and pinion in every combination I could come up with, I finally figured out the side plate bearing on the opposite side of the handle was popping out of the frame when reeling forward causing the main gear that sits in that bearing to back off a hair and it would re-seat it self when back reeling. Adding shims to the front and backside of the bearing won't help. You Can do one of 2 things to fix this. You have to shim the outside of the bearing to make it seat snug. Take some aluminium foil, put it in the hole, and then seat the bearing. Cut the excess /w a box cutter and clean up all the extra. All that should be shimmed is the outside diameter of the bearing. Reel is butter smooth again. Or....buy a new side plate. That's what a graphite side plate will do I guess...

Strange. Does it matter if you switched the handle to the left or right side?
