Never shiner fished before and the only setup I have is my baitcaster with 50lb braid or my spinning with 10lb mono. I don't know if  10lb mono is enough for the fish we are targeting (6+ lb peacocks). If not, is 50lb braid sufficient? This fishing trip was a surprise and I don't have any of my other gear on me

50Lb is pretty universal for baitcasters. Maybe a touch heavy, but it'll work.

lol I know its universal for baitcasters but will it weigh the shiner down

It won't weigh the shiner down but it may float it, I use 50 a lot and it takes the lures forever to sink 

Look up Scott Martin vids on youtube. Think he used 10-12# line with shiners Florida canal peacock fishing.

50 is fine, 30 would be better. Mono would be even better, IMO. I'm thinking I'd like 15# Big Game for that. You could tie on a leader of mono.

 

I used to use 50# braid for jigs and worms just because it was also my frog rod. Then I got a frog combo and started using 30# on my jig/worm combo. It casts better.

 

Use a leader! I don't think those peacocks are known to routinely get that big, I could be wrong. You just want to make sure the shiner can swim freely and naturally, 50lb braid would definitely prevent that without a leader. I wouldn't go any heavier than 12lb leader. The 10lb mono should be good too. Good luck!

For the rare occasions that I've used shiners, it's been 50lb braid or 25lb copoly. 

This is a vid I found of Scott but with his kids they are using 10# braid and 12# leader.
