Reel Setting for Pitching/Flipping

Recommended Posts

Did a quick search and couldn't really find the information I was looking for. If you're setting up a baitcasting reel to pitch/flip (more important for pitching I suppose), how do you set the spool tension and brakes? I kind of assume you would want the spool tension and brakes lower than you would normally have them for casting. Or am I completely off the mark here? Thanks!

I keep my spool tension the same as if I'm casting, brakes a little lower than if I'm casting, but not completely off. You'll probably get a dozen different opinions, that's the way I do it.

I don't touch the brakes because I may want to cast out farther than a normal pitch.

I'll just lossen the spool tension.

No one right answer, and also depends on the specific reel and its brake system.

I generally am setup the same for casting as pitching though. With a Shimano reel with SVS I may back off spool tension a bit for prolonged pitching.

I prefer to use Daiwa with Magforce (any flavor).  I use very little spool tension, and high brakes.  If I'm using a centrifugal system, then I don't really change it at all, and rely on my thumb a little more.  I suppose I adjust per reel.
