I was wondering about the specs of dobyns rods. Especially the 7'3" champions in full cork. Seeing that they have a medium heavy x fast 1/4-1 1/2 oz lure rating. They also have a heavy fast with a lure rating up to an ounce...looking at both debating which would be better at general texas rig and jig pitching. I'm also hearing their fast is more moderate. I just don't know. Never held one, never seen one in person. No one sells them near me to look and feel one inperson, I've only seen them online. Any help would be Much appreciated.

What are you looking to do. Their ratings are a tad different but they are one of the best companies out there. My all around is a 744. The 7’4” has a heavy or 4 rating but it fishes more like a medium heavy. The 3 would be a medium. 

I'd be skeptical of a lure weight range as wide as 1/4-1 1/2. Can anyone with hands on provide feedback in that regard?

Give them a call, they are happy to answer your questions and will recommend a rod based on your usage and price range......you actually speak to the guys who make the rods and not a customer service rep.

General pitching/casting 3/8-1/2 oz flipping jigs and texas rigs.

No more like 3/8 to 3/4 plus a big trailer.

4,5,6 power dobyns aren't the same through the champ lines (or any of them). A 765 is much stronger rod than the 735. There's a casting line and a flipping line in the champion. A dobyns fast isn't a moderate. That's more true in the savvy/fury series of rods but the champs are pretty close to their action. Power wise it's model dependent. No idea what rod you're looking at but for 3/8-1/2oz jigs you're going to want the champ 735.

I was looking at the 7'3" medium heavy extra fast and the 7'3" heavy fast.

735 is a "beefier" rod than the 734 despite it being labeled a mh. Neither lure rating's are very accurate towards the top end. 735 is the rod you want for 3/8 - 1/2 jigs. 

So technically in this case the mh xf is the beefier rod. Wow... that's what confused me. And I'm new to the numbered power system that these rods use.

Yes give them a call.  I spent about 45 minutes on the phone Gary Dobyns last week talking about the Colt and Fury line.  I have several of the Furys which are closer to the champions in power/Acton/taper.  The Sierra rod has slower actions than the other rods and the other rods seem a touch slower than say the Abu Veracity or ***.  For me I like extra tip and have zero trouble with hook sets. I realize these are more bare bones rods but it seems the characteristics carry through the line.
