What pound test do you use for topwater...especially larger topwaters like the Whopper Plopper 130 etc.?

Big surface baits with big trebles on long casts - 

I'm using braid.

Mono has too much stretch for me - hook sets suffer.

14lb mono for the Whopper Plopper and many others on a Carbonlite medium and they have a stiffer tip.  At least it has worked for me.

That's what I currently use but I'm wondering if I should be using a leader or direct tie?

what about for smaller stuff like spooks, poppers etc.?

If what you're currently using works for you then you're good.

I use a short (half rod length) stout mono leader.

I use 30# Tuf-Line SuperCaster.  It's a coated, fused superline with a mono core.  It floats, has zero stretch, and it's as if it was designed for topwaters.

Interesting .... may have to look at switching out the mono.

For the WP 90 I use 12 pound Berkley Big Game or XT Trilene mono. I tie it directly to the lure.

 

I have caught some toothy Pickerel in the 2 pound range and not had a problem. With the WP the treble hooks are crazy sharp. Fish basically hook themselves. I have to force myself not to immediately set the hook with this bait. The stretch of mono helps when my reflexes get the better of me and I set the hook to early.

 

If I had better control I might try braid.
