Last wed. 08/22/2007 some low life tweaker stole the 15 hp 4 stroke off of my jon boat!

I am just starting to calm down and it has been an expensive learning experience!

My main question is what is the best device/lock on the market to keep my motor and boat together?

That is what I use.

For an out board that small I would keep it in the house next to me and my Glock.

Yes I know that it is a pain in the rear but that's about the safest way of storing your boat pusher when they are that small.

Here in Houston outboards are regular stolen and then resold at flea markest, and place like that.

Locks and Dogs are both good but nothing beats the safety of you house.

Sold the boat since then but I had almost 10 trouble free years in not so great neighborhoods.  Lost several lawn mowers and weedeaters and a trolling motor- but never the outboard.

I just wish some one would steal mine.  It is out of warranty and I only have $100 deductible. ;D

True statement but if you use a motor lock & bolt the motor through the transom a thief will not take the time required to remove it.

A long length of coated steel cable and a masterlock.  It ain't fool-proof, but unless the crook brought some heavy duty tools, it's not coming off.  If he did, there isn't much to stop him.

I got my motor lock today but I'm a little confused about bolting through transom. It seems that it would slow the theives down by having to undo the bolts, but in the long run wouldn't that alone defeat the lock?

After thinking about it, would it help to use castle nuts and a cotter pin  or safety wire under the lock? Or would it be better to use a carriage bolt from the outside in?

Bolt the outboard through the transom using lock nuts; this along with the motor lock will slow the thief down. You see a thief wants to steal some quickly not some thing requiring an extended period of time to accomplish because they know the longer they hang around the better the odds he'll be seen.

Thanks, I think I will try the added protection of the castle nut with a locking key or wire!

I have lost some freinds to the Tweaker state of mind and know what they can do!

These guys are persistant, driven (chemically fueled) and are like RATS in SoCal.!

I hope this infestation doesn't come to your "Neck of the Woods" but its been here since the early 70's and keeps getting worse!
