Why the heck does every jig head (preferably a football head with either an open hook or a weed guard) have to be so expensive! They all cost an arm and a leg.

 

Can any of y'all recommend me a good jighead that is reasonably priced?

If you're loosing a lot of jig heads, you may want to check out one of the many offerings on that auction site, or consider pouring your own. The initial investment may take a while to make it worth considering, but you can choose the weight, color, weed guard, hook, etc. to fit your needs/wants.

For football jigs, I prefer lead over tungsten as it offers a bigger head. That translates to more action as it's dragged along everything but the smoothest bottoms.

It may be counter-intuitive, but I suggest that you not focus on the initial cost per jig head very much.  You can easily find yourself with inferior hooks or designs that end up getting lost/snagged more than better (possibly more expensive) heads.

 

Once I decided to concentrate on getting to the right design for my type of fishing -- the fine tuned differences in line tie and hook angle is pretty overwhelming...  I found that certain designs work best for the way I fish jigs.  Meaning, I lose less and ultimately save money.    If you already know exactly the design you want and just want cheaper options, I only caution to use sources you trust.  Buy minimum quantities until you know what you're getting from them.   May be just me, but in the early days of my tackle bargain hunting, I ended up with so much worthless crap from ebay; I particularly recall about 100 light heads that I bought -- straightened a hook on the first fish with them....turned out they were all crap

You have to pay attention to the hook and the number of heads. A lot of plain jigs (without skirts) are sold in packs of 2 or more so you have to keep that in mind. As for the hook, a jig head made with a premium hook (Owner, Gamakatsu, and Trokar) are going to be a lot more expensive.

Premium jig hook can cost $35 / 100 or .35 cents each.

GYCB plain painted foot head with Owner or Gamakatsu hook is about .95 cents each.

Add 4" to 5" Hula twin tail grub that includes a skirt for 10 ea @ $7 can't be considered expensive.

That's why I started pouring my own. Initial cost is high, but I fish enough that it quickly paid for itself. Spending 5X as much per head what I can make one for and have it customized to my specs, that was reason enough for me.

would price match something similar if you ask.  Or fleabay for really cheap but be careful of quality.  If your constantly breaking off on rocky bottom you should lighten your weight or change to a different technique (regardless if bank, kayak or boat).

Can you post a link for these? Most places I look jigs are sold in 2 packs of 5+ dollars cost 

Yup those Boss heads are top quality. Get finish skirts or make your own from tab. Finished jig for under two bucks each.

I bought a 25 pack of unpainted 1/2 ounce round head jigs from the local Cabela’s retail store for $7. Hook quality is very good. Add some fingernail polish and some replacement skirts and I have enough jigs to last a while. They aren’t weedless however.

 

There are some eBay sellers that do a good job casting them and that use decent quality hooks. I bought some well made weedless ones at a pretty good price. The seller was jkbfly.
