I need to grease the worm gear on a couple of my reels. The only grease that I have on hand is some choke tube grease for my shotgun. I’m thinking that will work ok, what do you guys think?

I don't see why not. In most cases grease is grease. 

From, researching this is seems most use gear oil on that and or clean it well and use TSI-231

I don’t grease the worm gear as it attracts dirt. A few drops of reel oil once or twice between cleanings keeps things running smoothly. When it starts looking a little nasty, it’s time to clean the reel. 

Discussion on worm gear lubrication is like discussing if you like your eggs scrambled firm or soft.  Three popular choices are:  use oil only, use grease only, or use grease mixed with oil. Shimano's position is a very light coat of grease.  Personally, all I have ever used is ReelX on my worm gears and it works for me. 

Any grease will work on reel drive gears but some are better than others.  My favorite is Superlube grease with PTFE, a white medium viscosity multipurpose grease sold at Napa in small tubes or 400 gram cans.  As for worm gears, I lube mine with reel bearing oil.  If lubed with grease, the worm gear accumulates trash from the incoming line while fishing and needs to be cleaned and lubed more often.

Bearing oil is fine.  I even had good luck with ATF.  Grease gets too dirty too quickly for me.

Most recently I've settled on a film of gear oil on worm gears for staying power without the gumming you can get with grease in an exposed application. I'm experimenting with dry lube with good results so far. Probably not cost effective or necessary for DIY of a few reels. 

The reason that I asked about the grease is I noticed that a couple of reels felt like the worm gear needed to be lubed while out fishing the other day. I have been using oil on them and thought the grease would last longer and give better lubrication. I have been using Reel Butter Oil on them.

 

An additional note, since I was out on the water when I noticed this and didn't have the oil with me I gave the worm gear a squirt of ReelSnot and that actually smoothed it out for the rest of the day. 

Bantam oil is what I use.

Breakfree CLP works good. You don't want to use grease on the level wind worm gear.

For a profession coating either titanium nitride (TiN) or Teflon nickle would good for permanent lubrication, not 1 of process due to cost.

Shimano and Daiwa comes with grease from the factory. I tried using a heavy weight gear oil per a recommendation on here, but have went back to using grease on them. It stays put longer and it’s never given me any trouble.
