Bass fishery management, whats a good size pond?

Featured Replies

There are obviously MANY variables with respect to habitat that result in trophy bass, and they all interact with each other making it even more complicated.

But in terms of a guideline for size of pond for bigger bass, how many acres are we talking here?

Put it this way.  If you could buy a piece of land with your own pond, how big would  you want it to be (not worrying about all the other variables).  Thanks.

20 acres

Best source to answer this question is Bob Lusk The Pond Boss.

Camalot Bell in Texas is 40 acres, a trophy bass lake/pond.

There are 2 acre rock quarry ponds that have some big bass if a source of plentiful prey is availble. Quarry ponds are deep usually spring feed with fresh water year around.

The most important factors other than location/weather/strain of bass.. is forage and other predators !

I have access to several ponds... There's a 2 acre pond cleared all the way around with a small island and cove that produced a 23 1/2" LM for me a year or two ago... There is also a 4+ acre I fish that has small "stunted" bass. This being because there are too many bass and crappie in the pond !

If you want BIG bass there needs to be less bass in the pond... And an abundance of prey.

If you had a 1+ acre pond and regularly stocked it with creek chubs and crawfish from a creek, together with bluegill/sunfish.. You can still have big bass !

BUILT FOR BASSIN'-Here's an overview and artist drawing of a six-acre bass lake designed by Ray Scott, the "Bass Boss." Note the ridges and pickle barrel structure spots in the design. Scott's video series on "GREAT SMALL WATERS" explains the facts on building, managing and rehabilitating small lakes and ponds.

I caught my personal best 8.5 pounds in a 1 and a half acre pond.
