What pound test of Sufix 832 braid should I go with?

Recommended Posts

It's time for me to get some new line on my main rod. My main rod is a 7' Lew's Speed Combo 2 baitcaster and I fish for largemouth bass with it. Being my main rod if I have to just grab one rod out the door it's the one so with it I fish many types of lures. Could be flippin, spinner baits, jigs, crankbaits, frogs, chatterbaits or whatever. Always been a braid guy and after using Sufix 832 last year I was sold this is the line for me. I went with 40 lb test and now I am wondering if I should try the 30 lb. Maybe it is not true but I have always been told fish the lightest line you could safely get away with because it would be seen less and cast further. For my purposes and how I intend to use it should I give the 30 a try or better stick with the 40?

Sounds to me like 40lb. is more your comfort zone, especially as you mentioned filpping and frogging.  The difference in line diameter is minimal. I personally use 30lb. on all but my froggin'/punchin' rod and have been for years.

See that's the thing, I wouldn't say its my comfort zone but more that not having other experiences with difference strength I don't know what would be "best" for me in this situation. I've never had some great battle with a fish and felt like I would have lost it without that last 10 pound of strength, as it were. Because if that were the end all, be all to what line to use I should get 50 or 65 or even more. I guess a better question would be would the "benefit" of dropping down to 30 truly be a harder line for fish to see and further casts or is that just a wife's tail?

40 is the best size for a standard size casting reel.  I have used 30 and 20 but those are better on smaller reels like alphas and the like.  Each person is different but I would keep 40 on a multipurpose rod.

I think 30 might be more appropriate. Sufix seems underrated, as far as strength goes.

Give the 30# a shot. All you need is 75 yards on top of some backing. That's the cost of a Subway $5 foot long and a bag of chips. Experimentation with tackle is the nature of fishing.

With the exception of one BC with 30 lb, I use 20 on the other with no ill effects.

Keep in mind it's all about the cover you're gonna fish in the most.

40# is on the low end for frogs and punching and 30# on the high end for most vertical moving baits.

Both will work just not ideal.

I've caught fish in the heavy stuff useing 16# flouro before and I'm sure other folks have also just not as a steady diet.

Anyway, for 1 rod to cover all techniques including top water either one will work, just adjust your landing technique.

Almost (All?) all companies underrate their braid.  From what I've read very, very few break near rated strength.

Braid for the most part is bought based on working dia. Not strength.  Smaller lines have issues with dig in wind knots tip wrap and other fun stuff.  I have not had these issues with 40lb.  If your only worried about strength the 20 would do just fine.  I don't always provide all the reasons for my choices, but those are why I don't like 30 and bellow on a full size bait caster.  I use braid for moderate to heavy weeds where it's strengths are best used.  You will determine what size is right for you and what you prefer.

If I was targeting all 3 species on the same rod, I’d be using 15 lb braid.

A far as color: yellow if I was going to use a leader, green if I wasn’t.

over the day, my line will dig in if i use braid.  i have 40 on a BC, and messed up cast, flips, pitches, where the spool loosens, and i do a few fake hooksets..it will dig in.

i manage it fine, but i keep in in mind.  i almost know the sound where i can tell, i need to cast towards the wide open and reel it back in tight.

just me, you all must have better management skills than i do.

What type of reel and rod do you have?
