Help Setting up My Spinning Setups

Featured Replies

Currently have 2 spinning setups I use. Want to setup a 3rd as i do a good amount of finesse fishing here in WNY. Just bought a Shimano Stratic 1000 HG off of ebay for $117 that i couldent pass up. So right now i have 2 spinning rods and 3 reels.

Rods:                                                  Reels:

7’1” Envy Medium Fast                          Ci4 2500

6’6” Fenwick HMG Medium light Fast       Shimano Stratic 1000 HG

                                                           Pfuegler Presidente 2000 or 2500

So need to get a 3rd rod to complete my spinning setups for right now. What i want is:

- Drop shot setup ( do lots of )

- Ned rig/spybait setup

- Neko/ Small jig

* On the 2 setups i run now i use 10lb braid to leader

* on the ned rig/spybait setup i was planning on running 6lb yozuri hybrid if that what you guys think...?

Ok so what i need help with is:

- What 3rd rod would you guys recommend / length and power ($100-$200)

- How would you pair the 3 setups

- and what setup would you use for each technique

Thanks for the help guys! This site is amazing with all the knowledge out there

St. Croix Avid 6'8'' M XF.   Set you back $200.   I would put the Stradic Ci4 2500 on it.  It should cover a lot of techniques.

Or, read this thread and maybe save a pretty coin and

load up on another reel, or some baits :)

You have a ml, m, why not a mh?

I would recommend a longer ML for drop shots, the other two techniques can be covered by what you have

I have this set up for my weightless 4”Senko especially wacky Rig. Love the rod.

I have bait casters for all my MH needs

So looks like.......

My medium Envy for light jigs/neko

6’8” HMG for Ned/spybait

Then new 7’ - 7’3” ML rod for Drop Shot make ya hot!

Dang really like my envy with the Ci4 for my drop shot setup as its super light and sensitive but also was thinking that a ML would fit my dropshotting needs better. Didnt want to break the bank for a new rod (was thinking round a $100) but if that new rod will be for drop shot make ya hot, might just have to buy a shiny new toy.......

If you drop shot a ton then maybe buy a specialty drop shot rod.

For example, Daiwa has the Tatula Elite Series. Cody Meyer designed a rod that is designed just for drop shots.

It's a 7' Med Light

They are $180 but if that is the technique you use the most then maybe buy a more expensive rod for that application.

Most companies are doing these types of rods now if you don't like Daiwa.

This ^. In fact, since buying the st Croix mojo 6'8 m-xf spinning rod and St Croix Avid X 6'6 Mh-f casting rod, I don't use my other rods much. These two rods are so versatile.

I just bought these two exact rods and are looking for reels. Any recommendations ? Trying to keep it versatile like you mentioned.

I have a Pflueger President XT 30 spooled with 10 lb braid on the spinning rod. I have a Daiwa Fuego CT in 8.1:1 gear ratio with 30 lb braid on the baitcasting set up. Both have served well so far and are very good bang for your buck reels.
