Do they actually work well? I'm wanting to get into kayak fishing and I don't want to eat ****, flip, and lose all my gear. I already lost one rod recently and it wasn't a very good feeling. 

 

My other option is just leashing them, but I feel like all of the cordage everywhere would get in the way and annoy me enough into not using them.

I kayak fish also. My kayak is stable in the water. I flipped it once and lost 2 rods, tackle,  killed my phone, and had to buy a rearm kit for my life vest.

 

It was pilot error on my part. I fumbled my rod when switching hands and missed it on the first shot. Reached too far and flipped over. I got the rod in the end....Sadly my cheapest combo.

 

No leash, no floats for me still. 

 

Probably would be worth it if your clumsy or paranoid. I think a pool noodle and zipties is a cheaper alternative if uour not willing to live on the edge.

I have tried them and get slightly annoyed by the noise of occasional line slap, but performance wasn't noticeably affected.

I go back and forth on the floats, I have not used them this year, but I had a near-miss the last time I was out and standing in my yak, so I might go back to them.  

 

I really need to see if my full-cork handle rods will float on their own, but I have been too lazy to want to deep clean my reels after the dunking, so I have yet to do it with most of them.  

 

I have a couple leashes (they are paddles leashes with a Velcro strap, easy on and off) but only use them while the rods are not in use in the rod holder, and right now it's only on 2/6 of my rod holders on my kayak. The noddles things always seemed silly to me since I personally am grabbing the butt of the rod to cast 95% of the time....grabbing a pool noodle would feel weird. But to each their own and I can't deny it would keep your rods floating if you tip. 

I tried them awhile back, didn't like casting with them so I removed them and take my chances.

The one you posted might have problem getting into reg rod holder or most used DIY PVC pipe. I go with the route of DIY pipe insulation 1/2" hole. The pipe insulation is pretty small diameter so after zip tie, make it low profile enough and you should have no problem with casting. I had done mine last year and never take it off even when I bank fish or in a boat.

I do use leashes but only when the rod is not in used.

yeah i should pick up some of those rod floats. this past weekend i was trying to unhook a bass, i let the clutch open to make it easier  to unhook and then the rod went into the water. was fun trying to pull it up with the line on a reel in free spool.
