Two Different Scenarios...What Would You Use?

Featured Replies

Okay, so we'd like to go fishing one morning this weekend. The weather report is as follows:

Saturday - cloudy with temps in the mid 60's, chance for an occasional shower.

Sunday - partly cloudy to mostly sunny with temps in the upper 60's/low 70's.

1st, which morning would you prefer and 2nd what types of baits and 3rd what color schemes would you use?

This is a smaller pond, about 30ft. deep in the middle but predominantly shallow like from 2ft. - 12ft., it is essentially two small ponds connected by a long, narrow canal. It is also strictly a warm-water fishery, holding pickerel, largemouth bass, yellow perch and sunfish. The main body of water is ringed with lily pads and cattails and a ton of other vegetation, the water is pretty clear. Let's call the water temp 70 degrees...give or take a couple of degrees.

During periods of low light - A frog around the pads & cattails.

Rest of the day - two baits:

A  Texas rigged weightless stick worm (Senko)

and a very light ( 3/16 or 1/4 oz)  Medium size Texas rigged  skirted craw or creature bait;

worked painful slow along the bottom.

I would choose saturday and give buzzbaits a heck of a try . Of course I  would  throw some plastic worms too .

On Saturday, I would get on the canal and cast into the main part of the pond.  I'd start out with topwaters, and make it big and noisy so the bass under the pads can hear it.   Later on I would use a jig, or a t-rigged plastic worm, and target the edges of the lily pads.

Saturday is my type of bass weather; thinking about my tackle selection, my first casts would be with a live target sunfish in shallow cover.  I'd also be working near the surface along weed edges with a weightless pearl white super fluke, Texas rigged.  Maybe a buzz toad too. A spinnerbait of some sort would also get some work, I'm sure.

If I had to slow it down, I'd opt for a Texas rigged senko or, as mentioned, a small-ish skirted jig/craw combo.

Wouldn't matter.

Frogs in the vegetation, top water around it, Rage Bug or Craw below it, and a Fat Max ribbon tail through it until I found a pattern and stay with it

Don't fish on Sunday ?

At first light I would throw

1. Rage Cut R Green Pump/Pearl Belly, Texas Rigged, 1/8 oz bullet weight; buzz on top & dropped into holes.

2. Zoom's Salty Super Fluke Crazy Chrome

3. Jig-n-Craw or Texas Rig 1/2 oz probably something matching bream

Fish cloudy days when I can.  Zoom toad near pads, or some other frog type bait.  Trick worm or jig and pig.  Clear water, use greens, dark water use black or purples.  That is where I'd start.
