Eggs vs no eggs weight

Featured Replies

Just curious, if you had a bass fat on baitfish and another bass fat with eggs. Which one would weight more?

Pre spawn bass have both eggs and feeding heavy before moving up to lay eggs.

The question is does a bass with stored fat biult up prior to the spawn weigh more then a bass during the other seasons without eggs?

Eggs are heavier then water so they sink and remain in the nest. Fish meat and bones are also heavier then water. Bass eggs sacks are smaller then the stomach, so a full stomach should weigh more.

Not all from eggs but I bet they made a difference.

The old rule of thumb is a femal bass full of eggs gains about 10% body weight.

Having caught hundreds of big pre spawn female bass the 10% rule seems fairly good.

A 10 lb bass can eat a 1 pound trout and if full egg sacks increasing it's weight 2 lbs or 20%, so it's the combination of pre spawners heavily feeding that increasing body weight to the max.

I totally agree with @WRB

I caught a 21.5 inch bass that weighed 8.6 pounds. It was full of eggs and extremely well fed. The pic gundog posted above could have been the same fish. This is the fish but the pic doesn't do it justice.20170106_124908.thumb.jpg.e071bef9d7c02a669057afc5aac16012.jpg
