carpet

Featured Replies

Hey guys, i"m fixin to redo my carpet and need some info.  How do I measure for the amount of carpet and what kind of glue do I need?  Any special tips would be outstanding,  thanks

I guesstimated the amount of carpet based on the legnth and width of my boat.  I got the glue at the hardware store.  It was formulated for the type of carpet i was using.

Ask the people at the store they will steer you in the right direction.

Welcome to the forums.

The glue that you use should be outdoor carpet glue. When you open the can it should look like peanut butter.

Measure the length and width of your boat and the height of all the vertical surfaces and then add about three feet in length to the end of your total and you will have enough to do it.

X2, Do not put the carpet down with any other type. It will get wet and allow the carpet to roll up. Buy the carpet from a boat dealer, not the cheap stuff that the walmarts sell. It won't last. The carpet is sold by the linear foot and comes in rolls that are plenty wide enough to do a boat. I think the last I bought was about 7-8 dollars a foot.

if you use staples, use stainless steel they cost more but they won't rust

(by the way glue is the way to go, staples should only be used untill the glue is dry)

I used some carpet from lowes and I also used 3M I think it was 90 or 99 adhesive glue and dont be stengy with it. Worked great for me.

del, the 3m glue at the Home Depot/lowes works great and lastest. Make sure the carpet fibers are running the same way throughout the boat. When it comes to the edges like your storage boxes livewells, i would recommend using liquid nails in those areas it's stronger than the glue. Let the glue get a little tacky before appling carpet to the edges. Depending on the temp. outside glue set time might take a little longer in cold temps. Above all TAKE YOUR TIME! A rushed job will show.

I built a deck extension and recarpeted my boat last year.  I was impatient and bought my carpet from Lowes instead of ordering it from a marine dealer.  After having it for a year I will say that I am happy with the choice and it has held up well.  You do need to use outdoor carpet adhesive for the flat areas and use 3M contact cement for things like doors and hatches.  The carpet adhesive doesn't dry fast enough and the carpet will pull away from the wrapped edges.  I bought an 8' x 18' piece for my 15' boat.  I think I only spent about $80 on carpet, adheasive and contact cement.  It is a cheap upgrade.
