Breaking Rods, How many per year do you?

Featured Replies

I’ve only had one break in the last 20yrs. and that was from a muskie strike 15ft. from the boat whe i was bass fishing.

I feel for those that break a couple in one year.

  • It’s been more than five years since I broke a rod. Sounds like you’re high sticking and not letting the drag do it’s job.

I have broken 2 over the past 5 years, both my fault.  The most recent one was just plain stupidity, I grabbed a Veritas by the tip in order to move it over a few inches in the boat.  Snap.

I’ve broke 2 rods in 45 years.  Neither of them while fishing.

2 since 2005 and none in the last 10 years.  No clue how they broke either.  They were in the tubes in the rod locker in socks.  Pulled them out of the sock and they were broke.  Both St. Croix LE 68MXFs, one spinning and one casting.

average one per year but fish   75+ days a year with nearly half being in the dead of winter, crawling, climbing, slipping and falling along the banks of muddy rivers.

Loomis has a great policy- 1 phone call and new rod delivered in 2 days.

1 broken rod and 1 broken guide in the last 20 years. The broken rod happened when I was younger and I had a large pike split the boat on me and I didn't know how to play a fish like that. So I essentially high stickied the fish and broke the rod in half.

The broken guide was on a Fenwick HMG about 3-4 years ago. Pretty sure that guide got stepped on at some time while laying on the boat deck. I went to bend it back and it snapped off.

The only rod I have ever broken while fishing was about 12 years ago.  I was snagged and I grabbed the line too close to the rod tip.  I have lost 2 or 3 rods over the years to tailgates, doors, and low ceilings.

Ten years ago I broke 2 rods on two separate occasions with the tail gate of my truck. That’s it can’t remember braking any since then I’ve had a bunch of broken guides on my ugly sticks for catfish and striper but that’s it.

I'm getting frustrated, as a fisherman on a budget I cant quite seem to either buy quality or luck. This is the 3rd rod Ive had break in 2 years. Granted, two last year were cheap ultra lights for trout fishing, but this was a less then 2 month old  rod (11+1+1). The fish took me under the kayak and snapped the top 6 inches off. They want me to ship the broken rod, and pay return shipping which would cost nearly 50$ by the time I get a container to ship it back in. Can I use a broken rod?

How many per year do you break? Should I switch to ugly stik?

The last rod I broke was about 10 years ago and it was a 9' crappie rod and I broke it with my truck tailgate. Before that one I'd have to go back to when I was a kid. And I've use some really cheap rods through the years. I have 3 $30 Berkley Lightning rods that have caught a lot of bass over 5 lbs. and I fish from a kayak. One of those fish pinned me against a dock. One of those fish swam under my kayak and pinned me against a dock. I had the rod stuck into the water with the fish jumping under the dock on the other side of my kayak-LOL. I had to put my thumb on the spool and yank that fish out of there. I landed it with no rod damage. I do have a couple better rods...a Falcon and a Cabela's ZX.

You might want to at least look into an Ugly Stik Lite. I think they have a 5 year warranty.
