Trying to resurrect this thread because Dobyns Sierra rods are on sale on TW. Thinking of the 734 or even better the 704 since I am fishing out of a kayak. Have you (or anyone) thrown small frogs and/or toads on the 734 in any of the Dobyns lineups? Will eventually get a frog-specific rod but not to start with. Gary Dobyns recommended the 734 to me in an email, as an all-around rod, but said he never recommends a 4 power for frogging. But he likely throws frogs in much heavier cover than me. I’ll be hitting weed lines and light Lilly pads mostly.

Toads, yes all the time. Frogs, no, unless it's open water/sparse pads. 735 is more ideal for both.

Dobyns rods run 1 power lighter than advertised. Nothing in fishing is set in stone so don’t get caught up in manufactures labels.    734 champion is what you want.

  • Dobyns started his rod company using Lamiglas rod blanks, then went off shore to have them made. Lamiglas power ratings are; 2 medium light, 3 medium, 4 medium heavy and 5 heavy for standard bass rods

  • I just purchased a Dobyns 735C based on the recommendations from the members on this forum and also You Tube reviews. I got it for $99.91 free shipping. Main use will be for frogging. See the attached

I'm not a guy that follows a specific rod line.  I have mostly old powell rods now, but currently a hodge podge of rods from several manufacturers. Wit that said, a champion rod for 185 bucks is a steal.  Good rods.  Grab them while you can
