I recently acquired a Whopper Plopper 190 model.  I have been using a 168 model for a couple of months and really like it. 

 

For whatever reason (maybe due to rod & reel combo) I it is much harder to get the  190 model above water and spinning in comparison to the 168 model.  The rod can handle the lure, but it is as if I need to use a reel with a faster gear ratio.  Anyone else have this issue?  Using a Shimano spinning reel and a saltwater rod.

7.5" weighing in at 2.75oz's.

The 190 makes a much louder sound than the 168.

There isn't a 168 plopper. Sizes are 75, 90, 110, 130, and 190. The 190 is a monster, I have one, and I have a really hard time imagining the situation you're trying to fish one where it won't get on the surface and spinning. The 190 is about like someone put a plopper tail on the back of a small cucumber, makes a ton of commotion and pops to surface in a hurry. 

What is a 168?

*The black (Loon) color 190 works well for great white sharks looking for a seal meal !  The 190 size strikes me as being used on the Big O , Lake Toho , etc.  (Florida strain bass) or out at Clear Lake , CA Delta (California) . I like the 110 size most often for all other bass (although there are those who prefer the 130 size even on spotted bass - go figure ) .

75 and 110 only here

Those larger Whopper Plopper 190's were designed to be used as musky lures by Larry Dahlberg. They have caught small and largemouth bass as well. 

I throw the 190 for muskies here in MN and in Canada. The 190 runs the best by far out of all the sizes, even with 14 inches of steel in front of it. Could be your bait is defective or the tail has something catching on it.

I throw the 190 size for largemouth here in KS. I've even caught white bass on it. Great when there's lots of wind, pulling them out of weeds, or looking for a quality bite.
