Mounting transducer on trolling motor

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I am working on my own jon boat conversion project (hope to post pics in the near future), and I was wondering how some of you all mounted and wired your fishfinder's transducer on to the trolling motor. I have a tiller electric trolling motor that I can take off when I am trailering the boat or if the boat is stored outside (so no one can swipes it).  I want to mount the transducer on the trolling motor, but what do I do with the transducer wire? It comes with 10 feet of wire, and I know you should not splice it, or it will disrupt the calibration of the fishfinder. I do not want to have to take all the wiring out (leading to the battery and to the transducer) every time I want to take the trolling motor off. Is there a way to have another receptacle (next to the power receptacle for the trolling motor)  I can plug my transducer into?  Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If you have a tiller motor why not just mount your transducer to the transom and be done with it.If you have a bow mounted trolling motor, then transducer mounting becomes beneficial.

But to answer our question transducers are typically mounted to the trolling motor with a big hose clamp with zip ties holding the wire to the trolling motor shaft

Sorry for any confusion. The trolling motor is mounted to the bow of the boat.  I am trying to figure out a way to have a way to quickly disconnect the transducer when I am storing away the trolling motor.

Don't mount the transducer to the trolling motor.  Mount it to a piece of PVC or aluminum pipe and then clamp it to your bow or transom.  Use your imagination.

why not mount it to his trolling motor?  like was said earlier zipties and a big hose clamp are your friends, thats how all boats are done

mount it on the trolling motor and zip tie it,when you take off your TM just wind the trans cable around the shaft

You first must buy a bracket to mount a transducer to the trolling motor; it sales for $6.00 & comes with the clamp.

thank you for the comments regarding attaching the transducer onto the motor body, but I was more interested in the wiring that leads to the transducer.  I am trying to figure out a way to have a quick disconnect for the wire to the transducer, so that when I take the trolling motor off the boat, I don't have to dismantle the wiring from the boat and to the battery.

Haha. Unfortunately, there isn't a good way, that I've seen at least, to do what you want to do. I know with my sonars (Humminbird 525s) the transducer connector is screwed into the mount. I definitely wouldn't try splicing it unless you've got alot of experience in wiring. My dad's a Master Electrical Engineer and he didn't want to try it so it is backed by someone  other than the manual who knows what they're looking at. You can buy transducers with longer cables for sure and you could do a transom mount with one of those. I'm surprised you only got a 10' cable. Mine both came with 25' and I had a hard time finding room for the extra. Haha. Good luck. Get inventive and show us what you came up with.
