M vs MH Power Cranking Stick

Featured Replies

I was given a BPS gift card and have decided on their Crankin’ Stick.  I want to use it as a general purpose cranking stick for everything from 1.5s to 1/2 ounce spinnerbaits/chatterbaits and even possibly deep divers some day.

M = 1/4 to 5/8 ounce lures.

MH = 3/8 to 1 1/2 ounce lures.

It was suggested that I should go with MH for more backbone for hook setting single hooks and the added drag of mid/deep diving lures.  This will be my first cranking stick.

Thoughts?

MH without a doubt!!! it makes a GREAT crankbait rod for just about any crank from 1ft divers to 12ft. AWESOME crankbait rod for the $$$!

If you plan on using spinnerbaits and chatterbaits I'd go with the MH also.

Check the actual action instead of just relaying on what's stamped on the rod.

Of the 2 the MH would probably be better because of its power.

However, depending on the line you're gonna use, I'd be concerned about setting the hook on a spinnerbait with an excessive parabolic bend especially on a long cast.

As @Mike L mentions I'd check the action of the rod as well. At first glance the MH is the way to go. You'll know if its right. A fast action rod isn't as "whippy" (is that a word I can use on here? :unsure:) as a moderate. Extra fast would work here.

Not to turn you away from a Crankin Stick, but you'll also be throwing big, single hook baits and while the MH has enough power for either application, you'll want a moderate/fast or fast action for hook sets across the board.

Thanks for all the input.  I will go with the MH. Even though I probably won’t use the upper range of the lure weight, the extra power sounds like it will make the rod more versatile and it will be worth any casting distance I might lose on 1.5s.

I’m throwing a medium heavy mod-fast cranking stick and love it! Loads of power, parabolic bend in the rod is great! I haven’t lost a fish yet since switching to this stick! I can throw down to 1/4 cranks no problem! Caught my largest cranking bass last season on the 1/4oz squarebill

I think you’ll be able to throw a 1.5 further than you think on the mh.
