The Shadow knows.

 

There are usually clues, in this case the shadow on my friend Mike's shirt. And his oversized fist.  He's holding about a 2-1/2 pounder.

I always just measure them to check if they'd been a keeper in a tournament so I can estimate what my best 5 woulda been. If I catch one HAWG status I'll get it's girth real fast an use the formula , which is usually really really close.
